Post-match Reaction: Shaun Derry
Cambridge United Manager Shaun Derry believes the U’s should not be too disheartened following an energetic display against Accrington Stanley at the Abbey Stadium this afternoon.
The U’s were quick out the blocks against their high-flying opposition as they secured a 2-1 advantage before half time through goals from Corr and captain Luke Berry. However, the visitors delivered a sucker punch after the break to flip the scores in the second period and clinch all three points.
Speaking post-match the United boss gave his assessment on what he felt was an honest performance from the U’s, and commented: “There were signs today of what could happen at this football club.
“I have to take the positives out of the game because I felt it was very honest performance.
“We have to stick to our beliefs and the players understand that my demands are very high but not unrealistic. When I first joined the club, I said that I didn’t want us to be a team on the back foot, and we certainly took the game to Accrington today, especially during the first half.
“Had we scored a third goal when we were on top, then the second half would have been a little bit different.
He continued: “There was a spring in the step and the defeat today feels different to our past losses which is encouraging. We were against an opponent [Accrington] who are very good at this level and have some very good confident players.
“There are fine lines in Football and if the players can take this hurt into Tuesday night against Morecambe then we’ll be on the right track.
“We need to play with the same intensity and quality that we saw at times today going forwards and I certainly don’t want to be too despondent.”
