Cambridge United's Emirates FA Cup campaign came to an end at the first hurdle on Friday night as Bristol Rovers secured a 2-0 victory at the Memorial Stadium...
Second-half goals from the hosts put Rovers in control, and despite hitting the woodwork twice through Sullay Kaikai, including a late penalty, the U's were unable to find a route back into the contest.
Neil Harris made three changes to the side beaten at Leyton Orient last Saturday, with Bangura-Williams, Moxon and Bauer replacing Heffernan, Hoddle and Perry.
It took until the 10th minute for the first real chance of the game, and it fell to the hosts. A knockdown in the box found Kilgour, whose powerful low strike flashed just wide of Eastwood's near post.
Despite their tricky recent form, Rovers started brightly. On 12 minutes, Eastwood was called into action, racing off his line to close down Cavegn and produce an excellent save to keep the scores level.
Soon after, Rovers' Leigh connected sweetly with a volley that looked destined for the target, but Mpanzu bravely put his body on the line, taking the full force of the effort in the face to preserve United's clean sheet.
As the half wore on, Neil Harris' side began to ask more questions of their opponents. A well-timed run in behind from Knight was picked out by Mpanzu, and his dangerous ball across the six-yard box almost found the onrushing Appéré.
The final act of the half was so nearly a decisive one. After Kaikai was hauled back 25 yards from goal, the winger dusted himself down and curled the resulting free-kick towards the top corner, only to see it crash against the crossbar as the sides went in level at the break.
The hosts emerged for the second half with renewed purpose and applied sustained pressure during the opening exchanges. Just as United looked to have weathered the storm, Rovers broke the deadlock on 57 minutes when Russell-Denny drilled a powerful effort home from distance.
Looking to change the momentum of the contest, Harris turned to his bench eight minutes later, introducing Heath, Lavery and Heffernan in place of Bradshaw, Bangura-Williams and Bennett.
Lavery made an immediate impact, driving the U's forward and registering the visitors' first effort on target of the evening. Cutting inside from the right, he curled a strike towards goal, but it was comfortably gathered by Young.
United's task became even tougher shortly afterwards when Cavegn doubled the hosts' advantage with an emphatic long-range finish, leaving the U's with a mountain to climb.
Lavery continued to threaten and came close to pulling one back on 75 minutes, only for Young to produce an excellent reflex save to tip his flicked header over the crossbar.
Stead and Perry were introduced as Harris made his final changes of the evening, and United were handed a lifeline when Heffernan was brought down in the penalty area following an inswinging corner. However, Kaikai's spot-kick struck the crossbar and bounced away, summing up a frustrating night for the team.
The U's will now turn their attention back to Sky Bet League One action, with Stockport County the visitors to the Cledara Abbey Stadium on Saturday 21 November following the international break.
