Half-Term Round-Up: A Busy and Exciting October for Cambridge United's Football Development Programmes

October half term provided a fantastic opportunity for players across our Girls, Boys Development, Boys Elite and Football Camp programmes to learn, compete and develop. From fixtures and tournaments to camps and special events, hundreds of players pulled on the Cambridge United badge and represented the club brilliantly throughout the break...

Girls Pathway

The October half-term period was packed with opportunities for players across our Female Pathway, providing valuable experiences both on-and-off the pitch.

We kicked things off with our Girls Elite Centre fixtures on the Friday before half-term, taking on a variety of opposition in challenging conditions. Despite a cold and windy evening, all of the players performed superbly and showcased some fantastic football. A huge thank you goes to everyone involved in making the fixtures such a success.

Our October Girls Football Camps followed, with more than 25 players attending each day. Participants enjoyed a varied programme that included futsal, competitive 1v1 challenges and the opportunity to meet Abbie Jackson from the Women's First Team. Players who demonstrated exceptional effort and attitude throughout the camps were recognised with Player of the Day awards, receiving certificates, medals, footballs and other prizes.

The girls' programme also ventured further afield, with our Emerging Talent Centre (ETC) U15 squad travelling to Wigan for a national tournament against clubs from across the country. Competing against high-level opposition provided an excellent development opportunity, allowing players to test themselves in a challenging and competitive environment.

Closer to home, our ETC U10 and U12 players enjoyed taking part in futsal fixtures in Cambridge. For many, it was their first introduction to the format and they benefited from support and mentoring from some of our Elite Centre players. Most importantly, every participant left with a smile on their face after a thoroughly enjoyable day.

The half-term programme concluded with our Girls Development Centre fixtures at Northstowe. Facing Ipswich, players across all age groups represented the club with pride, determination and resilience. While results were mixed, every player competed brilliantly. Special recognition goes to our U13 side, who were involved in a closely contested match and secured a hard-earned victory by a single goal.

Boys Development Programme

The Boys Development Programme saw outstanding engagement throughout the week, with a range of opportunities designed to support player development.

Successful football camps were delivered at both Linton and Hinchingbrooke, welcoming 32 outfield players and 37 goalkeepers. These camps were followed by player trial opportunities, providing participants with a valuable platform to demonstrate their ability and potentially progress further within the Cambridge United pathway.

Matchday action also played a major part in a busy schedule, with 161 players representing the programme across fixtures against Ipswich Town, Chelsea and Colchester United. The standard of performance throughout the week was excellent, with several age groups producing standout displays.

The U10s were particularly impressive, delivering strong performances against both Chelsea and Colchester United, while the U16s showcased their development with an excellent display against Chelsea. These performances continue to highlight the quality and competitiveness of players throughout the programme.

Looking ahead, there is plenty more to come, with an exciting programme of Christmas activities planned. Football and futsal camps, internal fixtures and additional development opportunities will ensure players remain engaged, learning and enjoying their football throughout the festive period.

Boys Elite Centre

It was another productive half-term for our Boys Elite Centre players, who were involved in a range of high-quality experiences and competitive fixtures.

Across the break, our Elite Centre squads took part in two challenging fixture programmes against Chelsea FC and Luton Town, providing excellent opportunities for players to test themselves against strong opposition.

Off the pitch, players from the U11 and U13 age groups supported Cambridge United scholars as part of their refereeing course, helping to create valuable learning experiences for both participants and aspiring officials.

Our U16 Boys Elite Centre squad also attended the Cambridge United-hosted U16 Academy Identification Tournament, where they enjoyed an excellent run to the final. The event provided another opportunity for players to showcase their ability against talented opposition.

Further success came with two Elite Centre players earning opportunities to represent the Academy, highlighting the continued effectiveness of the pathway in supporting player progression.

In total, 313 Boys Elite Centre players were invited to participate and play across the week, demonstrating the scale and impact of the programme.

October Football Camps

Our October Half-Term Football Camps were another huge success, with more than 400 sign-ups across our four venues in Chesterton, Swavesey, Comberton and Linton.

It was fantastic to welcome both returning participants and many new faces experiencing Cambridge United Football Camps for the first time. Throughout the week, players enjoyed a packed schedule of skill-based practices, competitive challenges and plenty of match play.

One of the highlights of the camps was the visit of eight Cambridge United Men's First Team players. They spent time answering questions from participants, sharing their experiences as professional footballers and creating memories that will last a lifetime. Players also had the unique opportunity to join in football activities alongside the first-team stars, making for a truly special experience.

The camps also helped support player progression, with several participants earning invitations into our Boys and Girls Development Programmes following their performances during the week.

Although October half-term has come to an end, preparations are already underway for our Christmas Football Camps. Taking place on 21 and 22 December at our Chesterton and Comberton venues, these camps will bring all the footballing fun and development opportunities of our regular programme, with a festive twist.
