Club unveils 1998-99 inspired Away Shirt

17 July 2020

Cambridge United are pleased to unveil the new 2020/21 away kit, which for a second consecutive season is inspired by another of the Club’s most popular former strips with supporters.

Following on from record sales for a Cambridge United away kit last season, with the highly popular 94-95 inspired remake successfully selling over 2,000 shirts, the Football Club have worked closely once again with Technical Partner Hummel to recreate another 90’s icon for supporters this year.

Inspired by the Club’s away kit between 1998-1999, United will once again take to the road for 2020/21 in a totally bespoke and unique design, which as well as featuring Hummel’s chevrons along the sleeves and side of shorts, has a modern twist on the striking dark blue, light blue half and half design which remains a fond memory from its mother shirt for many U’s fans.

Cambridge United supporters may also remember that the shirt was included in the vote two years ago for fans to decide which former strip they would like to see inspire the Club’s current away jersey. The 1998-1999 kit finished a close second behind the 94-95 kit, but given it’s iconic look and the nostalgia it holds of the U’s 98-99 promotion from Division Three under Roy McFarland, the Club are certain this year’s remake will prove equally popular with the United faithful.

Like the 2020/21 home kit, which was launched two weeks ago, Cambridge United are proud to be carrying the names of Club sponsors the Mick George Group on the front, Hill on the rear of the shirts and SOS Leak Detection on the back of the shorts.

Retail & Ticketing Manager, Gareth Daniels commented: “Heading into the second season with hummel as our technical partners, we are delighted to finally release our away strip for 2020/21.

“Continuing with the sky, navy and white colours of 19/20 and with a nod to one of my personal, and, fans favourite away shirts, we've added a modern twist to the iconic half-and-half style of 1998-1999. That memorable season of course saw the Club win at Hillsborough, before bowing out of the League Cup on a unforgettable night at Nottingham Forest with thousands of United fans packed behind the goal, as well as the year culminating in promotion to Division Two.

“This season’s shirt consists of a fully sublimated front panel with white detailing and a tonal club crest, matched with sky blue shorts and socks. After the successful launch of our new home strip, we look forward to seeing the United colours across the City and at The Abbey once again.”

The Amber Army can now pre-order their new away kit online at and over the phone by calling 01223 566 500, with a date for general sale to be announced in due course. Pre-orders will be delivered by the end of July.
