Cambridge United can confirm that striker Paul Mullin has returned to the Football Club, signing a new one year contract at the Abbey Stadium.
The 25-year old joined United on loan from Tranmere Rovers on deadline day of the January transfer window, and now returns on more permanent terms at the Abbey penning a deal until the end of the 2020/21 campaign.
His immediate impact upon arriving at the U’s, scoring twice in just six appearances alongside his levels of performance played a key role in the five consecutive games unbeaten (four wins) under Mark Bonner, quickly making him a popular figure with supporters, coaching staff and his fellow players alike.
Prior to his arrival at the U’s Mullin had featured 56 times for Tranmere in League One, where he hit the net on 12 occasions.
Delighted to now be making the switch to United on a longer term basis, the striker commented: “I’m very happy to be back after such a long period of uncertainty. I enjoyed my time on loan at the Club last season, and now I have an extended period to make more memories with Cambridge United.
“One of the key reasons I felt that I wanted to come back to sign for the Club has been Mark (Bonner, Head Coach). His man management skills are excellent and how he has been able to pull the group together to push for one goal, I want to help to make that successful.
“I enjoyed the games I played at the Abbey Stadium and it’s been a very easy decision. I’ve never been one for setting myself targets goalwise but I always aim to play to the best of my ability, and I think what the last few months have shown, it’s really important you enjoy what you do. So I’m really excited to get going again.”
Mullin began his career in the youth ranks at Liverpool and Everton before joining Huddersfield Town where he impressed at U18 and U21 level. His professional breakthrough came at the Globe Arena, where he featured over 100 times for Morecambe scoring 25 goals in three years, including a goal against the U’s on his first senior start at the Abbey back in 2014.
Since then, Mullin has also added further League Two experience to his C.V with Swindon Town, where he scored ten times during a one year stay at the County Ground in the 2017/18 season, before departing to Tranmere Rovers where he achieved promotion from League Two in 2018/19.
Pleased to have made Mullin a permanent addition to his first team squad for the forthcoming season, Head Coach Mark Bonner commented: “We want to build a team with attacking intent and in order to do that we need to sign creators and goal scorers.
“In Paul Mullin we have gained a player who has a good instinct in front of goal and impressed us all in his loan spell because of his work ethic and attitude. His infectious enthusiasm is a quality we are looking for to help us drives standards and create an energetic team.
“I'm really pleased to make him a permanent signing and believe in his ability to come and take the challenge in his stride.”
