Cambridge United Legends enjoyed a memorable European outing on Friday 9 January as they took part in the Bretterknaller 5-a-side legends tournament in Cottbus, Germany, competing against former stars from across the continent in a fast-paced and highly competitive event…
Managed by United’s all-time leading goalscorer, John Taylor, the U’s were represented by a strong squad of former players as Danny Potter, Andy Duncan, Ian Miller, Warren Goodhind, Omer Riza, Wes Hoolahan, Michael Kyd and Dave Kitson all donned amber and black once again.
The U’s produced an impressive series of performances throughout the tournament, finishing runners-up overall behind hosts Energie Cottbus, after victories against Hansa Rostock, Union Berlin and a Bundesliga Select XI.
It'll be no surprise to supporters that the standout performer on the night was Wes Hoolahan, whose quality and creativity lit up the Lausitz Arena. The former Republic of Ireland international finished as Player of the Tournament and joint-top goalscorer. Striker Dave Kitson also received plaudits, being awarded joint-most popular player.
Cambridge United would like to place on record their thanks to John Taylor for recruiting the squad, Nigel Pearce, 100 Years of Coconuts and Cambridge Fans United (CFU) for organising the club’s involvement, as well as to Ben McFadyean for his support and assistance in making the trip possible.
The club is proud to have represented Cambridge United on the European stage and to have played a part in another successful edition of the Bretterknaller legends tournament.
