Report: Chesham United Women 1-3 Cambridge United Women

Chesham United 1-3 Cambridge United

U’s continue their winning streak with a superb second half showing away at Chesham United.

The U’s kept up their recent good run of form as they made it five wins in a row, collecting all three points away at Chesham United.

After last week’s late heroics away at Sudbury, Sean Greygoose made one change to the starting XI bringing in goalscorer Becca Stephenson for Mia Richards.

The U’s got off to an electric start, pinning their hosts back and forcing a corner in the 4th minute which resulted in the opening goal.

A dangerous Zoe Wood corner was met at the back post by Abbie Jackson, initially denied by a combination of the crossbar and defenders before being poked home at close range by Brooke Cheal-Ferris.

The U’s continued to pile the pressure on and in-form striker Jade Bell was unlucky not to make it 2-0 as her curling effort hit the bar and went over just two minutes later.

Another chance evaded our striker in the 17th minute as a delicious cross in from the left fell to Bell, but she couldn’t get her header on target.

However, on the stroke of half-time the U’s were pegged back.

A corner in from the right was met by a wide-open Chesham player at the back post whose header appeared to have been saved on the line by Sophie Shults but the referee and linesman adjudged it to have crossed the line.

After the break the U’s were reinvigorated and it didn’t take long for them to grab back their lead.

A ball over the top found the onrushing Kim Farrow whose initial shot was well saved by the Chesham goalkeeper, but the U’s forward was not to be denied and calmly slotted the rebound into the bottom corner at the second time of asking.

Following the goal the chances kept flowing for the U’s and in the 55th minute Farrow was unlucky not to make it a brace after she was put in on goal only to see the Chesham stopper proving once again to be a worthy adversary, saving low to her left.

A few moments later it was Shaw who came close as Zoe Wood danced past the challenges of multiple Chesham defenders before teeing up the striker who couldn’t keep her header down.

In the 64th minute Sean made his first double substitution of the game as Tally Miles and Shannon Shaw were replaced by Mollie Coupar and the returning Sammy Edgar.

A minute later the U’s were in again and this time it was Jade Bell who was to be denied by the excellent work of the Chesham stopper to keep the scoreline at 2-1 as she got down well to smother Bell’s shot.

Chances were few and far between in the next 10 minutes as a couple of half chances for the U’s from range didn’t cause too many issues, however in the 86th minute our in-form striker finally got her goal.

After being put through one on one with the Chesham stopper, Bell didn’t make any mistake as she fired low and hard into the far bottom corner, giving the keeper no chance.

Another raft of changes in the 87th and 90th minute as Jarvis, Bell and Stephenson made way for Simmons, Marden and another player returning from injury, Lauren Rouse.

Despite heading into additional time there was still another golden opportunity for the U’s as a superb delivery from the left side was headed towards goal by a U’s attacker, only to be further frustrated yet again by the Chesham keeper who saved superbly with her feet.

The U’s have now record 5 back-to-back wins in the league and cup and find themselves joint for 2nd place in the league with Norwich who are our opponents next weekend as we host them in the league cup.

A reminder that the next league home game for the U’s is a monumental clash against QPR which will be the first of our two designated Abbey Stadium fixtures on October 12, tickets are available now and can be purchased here.
