Shayne Lavery celebrates

Cambridge United 2-2 Wycombe Wanderers

Sky Bet League One

Tuesday 20th October 2026

Cambridge United stretched their unbeaten run in Sky Bet League One to eight matches in pulsating fashion as they came from behind to gain a 2-2 draw against Wycombe Wanderers at the Cledara Abbey Stadium…

Two well-taken strikes from Jayden Wareham either side of half-time gave the U’s a mountain to climb, who clicked into gear when Shayne Lavery headed home a consolation before the hosts forced an own goal deep into injury time to seal a point apiece and move ascend to 4th in the table.

Firing on all cylinders with a nine-game unbeaten run in all competitions accumulated, United returned home with their sights set on a fourth consecutive victory to elevate them further up the division. In their way stood a Chairboys side sitting in 11th who, despite only Bromley conceding more than their 20 goals, had turned a corner following one loss from eight.

Three days on from sealing a comeback victory at the death against Barnsley at Oakwell, Neil Harris shuffled his pack by naming three changes to the starting XI as George Hoddle, Sam Curtis and Sullay Kaikai all returned.

Starting in assertive fashion, Tom Hounsell’s side were winning fouls and looked keen to progress the ball towards the final third. A corner on the 6th minute floated to Connor Taylor at the back post who got his head to it and diverted across the goalmouth but nobody was there to force an effort.

After a spell of being forced to camp back, the U’s gradually developed a foothold and caused the first scare on 21 when  Liam Bennett’s deep cross was spilled out of Conor Hazard’s gloves and fall invitingly to Zak Bradshaw lurking inside the penalty area, whose venomous first-time shot was blocked by the chest of Taylor.

Showcasing their ability in the transition from defence to attack, Wareham and Jack Grimmer linked up well down the right, resulting in the latter picking out a deflected sliced attempt that evaded Jake Eastwood’s right post.

Just shy of the half hour mark, Wycombe were agonisingly close to testing United’s number one when Fred Onyedinma supplied a teasing low ball which fizzed through the six-yard box which was almost matched by a diving Wareham, but the striker couldn’t quite get his boot to it as it dragged away from danger.

Although their moments in the opposing box were few and far between, the hosts did conjure up some danger following Kaikai’s corner on 41 when Curtis rose highest to execute a header which was put behind by Hazard at his near post.

However, two minutes before the break the Chairboys opened the scoring when Onyedinma kept the ball alive and jinked down the right before teeing up Wareham who dragged himself into the middle with a spin and rifled an effort which got a paw from Eastwood but not enough as it nestled in to conclude a testing half.

It was as you were heading into the second period for both sides, but the U’s would be pleased with how they approached it as Gassan Ahadme used his strength to win a foul from 20 yards out. At a left angle, Kaikai stepped up and it sailed over the wall and on target but Hazard dived to prevent.

Just as Wycombe started to throw the kitchen sink again and threaten with a sequence of dangerous set-piece deliveries, Harris opted for a switch to a front two as he introduced Lavery and Louis Appere.

On the hour, the encounter would now prove to be a mountain to climb as the Buckinghamshire outfit doubled their advantage. Following a spell in possession out wide, Anders Hagelskjaer picked out Wareham who executed a first-time finish into the top corner for his second of the night.

In response, Cambridge tallied up plenty of corners and were ramping up the momentum. A deft cross from Ben Knight on 75 found an unmarked Cathal Heffernan inside the penalty area, who with his back to goal brought the ball down but fired wide of the post.

Two minutes later, the U’s made it count to reduce the deficit and continue their goalscoring streak when an excellent corner was picked out by Lavery, who guided an unstoppable expert header into the corner to set up a grandstand finish.

With all of the ball in the attacking final third, the reinvigorated home side peppered the goalmouth and forced Hazard into a foray of saves five minutes from time when two ambitious drills from distance by Knight was stopped as well as preventing a ferocious Kaikai attempt.

Two minutes into the four of additional time, the U’s completed yet another spectacular comeback as Liam Bennett’s high cross from the right was turned beyond Hazard by Taylor to rescue a dramatic draw and extend their unbeaten run in breathtaking fashion.

Up next, it’s another battle at the Abbey on Saturday (24th October) as Plymouth Argyle make the long trek – be sure to back the boys.
