Cambridge United are pleased to announce the signing of centre-back Patrick Bauer, who joins the club on a one-year deal…

The 33-year-old defender began his career in his native Germany, coming through the VfB Stuttgart academy before signing for Portuguese side Marítimo.

He made the move to England in 2015, joining Charlton Athletic, where he became a key player over the course of four seasons, with his final act being the winning goal in their League One play-off final against Sunderland.

He spent the next six years of his career at Preston North End and his most recent stop was at AFC Wimbledon, who he featured 30 times for last season.

Bauer now arrives at the Cledara Abbey Stadium to help bolster United’s defensive options.

“I am really happy to be here”, Bauer said. “I had really good conversations with the manager and he explained the direction the club is going in, and I think it’s the perfect environment for me to play my football.

“I have been in football for many years so I will try to lead and help the boys – I am here to support on and off the pitch.”

Neil Harris added, “I am very pleased to bring Patrick to the football club as an experienced centre-half who competed at this level last year, as well as a much higher level here and abroad throughout his career.

“He brings the experience of the position, leadership qualities, and a real desire to help us develop and improve as a football club in this division.”
