Cambridge United are proud to unveil its special-edition Fourth Shirt for the 2026/27 season, inspired by the life and legacy of Cambridge icon Syd Barrett…
Created in collaboration with the Barrett Estate and set to be worn by the U's for this weekend’s fixture against Blackpool on Saturday 10 October - World Mental Health Day - the shirt celebrates one of the city's most influential cultural figures.
A proportion of replica shirt sales, together with proceeds raised through the auction of the match-worn shirts following the fixture, will go towards mental health work.
A pioneering songwriter, artist and founding member of Pink Floyd - one of the most influential and biggest global bands of all time who came from Cambridge - Syd's influence continues to resonate across generations, with his music and creativity inspiring artists and audiences around the world.
Produced with technical partners Umbro and Kitlocker, the shirt's striking diamond pattern references Shine On You Crazy Diamond, the iconic Pink Floyd composition written as a tribute to him following his departure from the band.
The orange and blue colour palette of the shirt is inspired by the distinctive floorboards featured on the cover of his acclaimed 1970 solo album The Madcap Laughs, creating a unique design that brings together football, art and music.
The launch campaign was photographed by renowned portrait photographer Charlie Gray at two locations closely associated with Syd's legacy: The Artyst cafe in Cambridge, dedicated to Syd Barrett’s memory, and Grantchester Meadows, the iconic setting woven into the story of Pink Floyd's Cambridge roots.
The release also coincides with wider celebrations marking what would have been Syd's 80th birthday. These include A Tribute to Syd Barrett: Official 80th Anniversary Celebrations at Cambridge Corn Exchange on 10 October, a commemorative album release featuring new recordings and previously unreleased material, and a week-long exhibition exploring his life, art and cultural impact at Openspace, Cambridge, from 3 to 10 October.
Rosemary Breen, sister of Syd Barrett said, "We are delighted and honoured to collaborate with Cambridge United on this initiative which helps highlight World Mental Health Day through the legacy of Syd. I am looking forward to coming to the match with other members of the family on Saturday."
The club would like to thank the Barrett Estate, Sony Music, Pink Floyd and all those who have supported the project.
As a club committed to being United for Cambridge, we are proud to celebrate the people, stories and cultural heritage that make our city unique, while helping to shine a light on causes that matter to our community.
The Cambridge United Fourth Shirt is available now from shop.cambridgeunited.com or in-person at the Club Store on Newmarket Road.
Shine on, Syd.
