Bennett visits Pledge United session as part of EFL Week of Action

Cambridge United defender Liam Bennett paid a special visit to the Club’s Pledge United programme this week, as part of the EFL’s Week of Action – celebrating the positive impact football clubs have in their local communities across the country…

The session, delivered by Cambridge United Foundation, brought together young people taking part in Pledge United – a project that uses the power of football to tackle gender-based violence and stereotypes - and encourage positive relationships on and off the pitch.

During his visit, Bennett joined in with the group’s activities, taking part in discussions about respect and equality before having a kick about with the lads, showing his support both on and off the ball.

He also shared his own experiences from the professional game, speaking about the importance of teamwork, respect and standing up for what’s right.

“It was great to come down and see what the Foundation are doing through Pledge United,” said Bennett.

“The lads were brilliant to work with and it’s really important to have these conversations at a young age. Football has such a big influence and it’s good to see it being used in such a positive way.”

Kieran Wood, Youth Engagement Officer at Cambridge United Foundation, added, “Having Liam join the session was fantastic for the young people involved. It’s not every day they get the chance to play and chat with a first-team player.

“His presence really helped reinforce the messages of Pledge United - showing that respect and equality are just as important off the pitch as they are on it.”

The visit was part of the EFL’s Week of Action (4–8 November), which shines a spotlight on the incredible work being done by EFL clubs in their communities throughout the year.
