Cambridge United today opened the Club kitchens to prepare meals on wheels, delivered in partnership with Cambridge Food Poverty Alliance for those families most in need across our local community.
As part of the ‘Here For U’s’ scheme, in which the Club is offering practical, emotional and physical support to the local community in the current difficult climate, Cambridge United delivered 55 sets of lasagnes, soups and bread & butter puddings.
We will be delivering almost 200 meals across the week to various parts of Cambridge. Today was focused on the Abbey Ward, the area closest to the stadium, where there is a child poverty rate of 26.7%. Further deliveries later in the week will be targeted at other disadvantaged communities across the city.
This initiative is part of the Cambridge Food Poverty Alliance’s wider scheme, ensuring that people have access to healthy and sustainable food. Together with their partnership with Cambridge Meals on Wheels, the club have helped facilitate over 100 hot meals out to the elderly and low-income families today.
This scheme also builds on the successful holiday lunches which have been held at Cambridge United’s Abbey Stadium in previous holidays. These were set up to tackle holiday hunger and improve community cohesion and despite the unprecedented circumstances, Cambridge United are aiming to continue tackling both these issues with the Here For U’s scheme.
Today’s deliveries also included special educational activity packs for families, that alongside the Here for U’s Sport in Education online lessons, aim to keep children engaged in learning through sport. These packs will be made available online right here at Cambridge-United.co.uk in the coming days.
