Manager Shaun Derry described Spencer’s arrival at the club against Leyton Orient last week, as a “whirlwind 24 hours”, in which the striker signed for the club the day before the clash at the Matchroom Stadium, slept at the U’s boss’ house before being substituted on in the 61st minute and notching his first goal just 60 seconds and three touches later!
For Spencer, events could not have panned out any better, he said: “It was the perfect scenario.
“I couldn’t ask for much more than to come on at Leyton Orient and score. I was sent on to hold the ball up high up the pitch and do my bit for the team.
“But Ben [Williamson] did brilliantly with the run down the line and unselfishly passed the ball to me when he could have quite easily gone for goal himself for the hat-trick.
“I don’t think I have made many better debuts in my career so far than that. I’ve certainly not scored on my debut before and that is always nice to do.”
