Despite being in the ascendancy for much of the game, the U’s came unstuck via a late goal from the visiting side and were unable to find a response.
Off the pitch, supporters enjoyed a hugely upgraded matchday experience. Alongside improved facilities, local favourites like Meat Up serving burgers, Herbie’s Bakes with sweet treats, and Odd Cow Coffee brought plenty of flavour. With the Football Fun Factory’s inflatable target practice and music from club sponsor Majority Audio’s jeep, a lively festival atmosphere buzzed well ahead of kick-off.
Following an impressive opening-day victory on the road at Billericay Town, manager Ethan Scott named an unchanged starting line-up for the home opener.
A healthy crowd of 175 - including Cambridge United Owners Paul Barry and Mark Green - gathered at the University venue to see the U’s kick off their new residency, and the hosts nearly provided an ideal start inside the opening 20 minutes.
A well-delivered corner caused havoc in the visitors' box before breaking to Strauss, who struck firmly toward goal only to see her effort cleared off the line by the Bees goalkeeper.
Twelve minutes later, Flye almost caught out the opposition with a floating cross that required a quick recovery save, while Gambell saw a powerful header tipped over early in the second half.
The teams went into the break all square, but United remained on top as the second half got underway. However, despite the hosts applying most of the pressure, the visitors struck against the run of play in the 71st minute - Breen climbed highest to head home from an in-swinging corner at the back post to break the deadlock.
United pushed hard for an equalizer in the closing stages. In the 80th minute, an in-swinging corner from Jeffery was again clawed off the line by the Bees keeper, before substitute Edgar dragged a long-range effort just wide in the 90th minute.
Although the result was disappointing, it was still a proud milestone for the club as their new era at Grange Road officially got underway. United return to Grange Road on Sunday 30 August for the visit of Dulwich Hamlet.
