Sheffield Wednesday 1-1 Cambridge United
Sky Bet League One
Tuesday 27th October 2026
Cambridge United gained a creditable point towards their Sky Bet League One tally as they fought valiantly for a well-earned 1-1 draw against Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough…
On an entertaining evening, the U’s were well-drilled and ambitious and, despite falling behind minutes into the second half through Mason Burstow’s fine finish, remained dangerous on the transition to battle back courtesy of Sullay Kaikai’s long-range attempt to extend their unbeaten start away from home.
Following on from a first defeat in 11 last time out, the visitors were eager to bounce back by making it seven matches without a loss on the road. Reinvigorated following a summer of positive change, the Owls entered the clash two places and points below in the table after succumbing to back-to-back defeats against Notts County and Doncaster Rovers, which signalled the end of Henrik Pedersen’s reign.
A quick turnaround signalled fresh legs as Neil Harris rotated his squad with three changes from Plymouth Argyle as Isaac Heath was recalled and Shane McLoughlin and Callum Perry recovered from injury to make their first starts since August and mid-September respectively.
The cauldron of noise on an atmospheric evening didn’t faze Cambridge, who with just 40 seconds on the clock caused a major scare and perhaps should have taken an early lead when Ben Knight’s corner was well-matched by Cathal Heffernan’s header, which was prevented by Ashley Maynard-Brewer and fell invitingly to Pelly-Ruddock Mpanzu from yards out but his poke was hacked away on the line.
Although it wouldn’t take long for the home side to build up steam, openings were there for the U’s on the break if they remained alert. Eight minutes in, Heath capitalised on a loose pass and sent Knight through down the left-hand side of the penalty box who drilled towards the opposite corner at a tight angle, but it sailed wide of the post.
Up the other end, Callum Slattery engineered the first effort on target of the night for Wednesday moments later by working his way from the left wing to unleash an optimistic effort from 25 yards which was comfortably claimed by Jake Eastwood.
Whilst the Owls enjoyed the majority of the ball, United’s approach was to allow them to try and break them down but remain stubborn, absorb the pressure and pick them off on the break. That application was showcased on the 16th minute when Heffernan headed towards a looming Liam Bennett inside the area who scampered past a hurrying Maynard-Brewer but with the angle closing in he was denied the shot by an applaudable recovery block from Ernie Weaver.
In end-to-end fashion, both defensive thirds were tested with the visitors’ resolve tested in successive attempts prior to the half hour mark when Reece James’ drilled delivery was smothered down low by Eastwood - Hull City loanee Burstow was present to lunge in but a no-nonsense block from George Hoddle bravely denied the opener, before the striker then flicked a header to Harry Gray in the next move but the volley was too high from 10 yards out as it sailed over the woodwork.
Concluding the first half in absorbing fashion, Slattery tested his luck with an ambitious right-footed attempt which was blazed high and wide, with Cambridge digging in deep and the last touch falling their way when Mpanzu fired inches over the crossbar to sign off a valiant 45 minutes.
Under the cosh early on after the break, Burstow made amends seconds after his instinctive backheel was stopped by drawing first blood on the 49th minute as a clever quick free-kick from Slattery was over the top and released the sprinting forward who clattered an unstoppable strike in off the post.
Having now conceded the opening goal in eight of their previous nine, the U’s needed to rekindle their comeback credentials and introduced a trio of changes on the hour as Zak Bradshaw, Kaikai and Shayne Lavery were introduced.
The latter was immediately productive – his first touch was to loop a Bennett cross towards the roof of the net with his head which Maynard-Brewer tipped behind for a corner.
Harris’ men would have had a mountain to climb on 63 if it wasn’t for the heroics of their shot stopper when Barry Bannan’s cross into the danger area fell to Burstow by the six-yard box, who at point-blank range was denied by an excellent reaction stop.
Three minutes later, a trademark U’s counter sent the travelling 1,200 fans behind the goal into delirium when substitutes combined as Lavery drove down the left and picked out Kaikai with a pinpoint pass whose left-footed lash from outside the box powered into the back of the net.
Matt Hamshaw’s outfit reacted in positive fashion by piling on the pressure and accumulating a significant opportunity on the 72nd minute when Bannan picked up the ball with space on the edge of the box and unleashed a 20-yard curler which had Eastwood beaten but the post was clipped.
As the minutes ticked down, United had their tails up. Knight released Lavery with an inch-perfect through ball, whose desire and presence saw him race towards goal and opt for a chip but a good stop by Maynard-Brewer and recovery put to an end the danger.
Five minutes from time, one of a plethora of U’s corners left the Owls defending for their lives as Lavery’s header forced a super save before Heffernan and Owen Moxon got on the end of an almighty scramble by firing at goal but a sea of defenders somehow kept the ball out.
Remaining incredibly end-to-end until the final moment, the visitors gave it everything they had to force a famous victory but in reflection it would prove to be a thoroughly-deserved share of the spoils in an absorbing evening of football in Sheffield.
Up next, the U’s are in the capital on Saturday (31st October) as they take on Leyton Orient at the BetWright Stadium.
