Isaac Heath scored the decisive goal midway through the first half, capitalising on a defensive mix-up to finish from distance. Neil Harris named a strong starting XI, handing starts to Eastwood, Bennett, Ball, Bauer, Watts, Heath, Knight, Ahadme, McLoughlin, Bradshaw, and Jobe.
Despite sweltering conditions, United started on the front foot, immediately posing problems for the Preston backline. They nearly took an early lead when Heath reached the byline and clipped a dangerous cross into the box, missing the incoming Ahadme by mere inches. Watts came close shortly after, driving across the edge of the penalty area before unleashing a fierce effort toward the top corner that forced an impressive save from the Preston goalkeeper.
The U's rewarded their early dominance around the half-hour mark. A misunderstanding between the Preston defence and goalkeeper gifted possession to Heath roughly 30 yards out, leaving the forward with the straightforward task of slotting into an unattended net. Preston grew into the contest as the half wore on and created a couple of promising openings, but United held firm to preserve their lead going into the break.
Harris made three changes at the restart, bringing on Appere, Mpanzu, and Perry for Ahadme, McLoughlin, and Bauer, with McConnell replacing Knight shortly after. McConnell provided United's brightest spark in the second period, carving out two excellent opportunities within ten minutes - first sending a difficult strike from a tight angle just wide, before executing a brilliant driving run past two defenders inside the box to force another fine stop from the Preston keeper.
Five further changes were introduced as the half progressed, with Lavery, Herd, McDougald, and trialists Smith and McAlinney all gaining valuable minutes. Although Preston exerted late pressure in search of an equaliser, Eastwood’s goal was rarely threatened as United comfortably saw out the win.
