Cambridge United suffered defeat on the road as they were edged out 1-0 by Sky Bet League Two opponents Bristol Rovers at the Memorial Stadium…
On an afternoon where the U’s were unable to conjure up any quality in front of goal, it was a close-range attempt from Ellis Harrison that secured the Gas their first three points of the campaign to frustrate the visitors, who failed to score in a match for the first time this season.
Looking to build on the momentum gained from the resolute victory at Colchester United in midweek, Neil Harris named just two changes to his XI as James Gibbons and Shane McLoughlin were handed starts following strong cameos. As a result, James Brophy and Pelly-Ruddock Mpanzu dropped to the bench.
Just 11 days on since their last meeting at the very same venue, the U’s were out to replicate a similar performance where they controlled proceedings from the first whistle to the last. Naturally, the hosts were eager to get off the mark with a first victory of 2025/26 to build on the stalemate against Oldham Athletic last time out.
The primary focus in the opening minutes was being cautious and winning individual battles to help find a foothold, with no sights at goal in a calm introduction with the possession flipping.
On the 10th minute, Harrison tested his luck from outside of the box whilst on the turn but dragged his ambitious and low shot extremely wide of the mark.
The striker’s next attempt just a few minutes later was agonisingly close to handing the Gas the lead as Harrison got on the end of Macauley Southam-Hales’ cross from the right but directed the downward header a matter of inches past Jake Eastwood’s left post.
United were slightly under the cosh and understood that they would need to bide their time. For now, it was a case of digging deep and seeing off any pressure forced by the hosts. On the stroke of the half hour mark, Harrison again threatened as he matched Josh McEachran’s delivery with a volley from 12 yards out, with the pressure of a defender ensuring it sailed off target.
The Pirates’ persistence paid off on the 33rd minute as they took the lead in front of the packed home terrace. Southam-Hales’ throw-in was flicked on by defender Alfie Kilgour, which required an instinctive first-time effort from Harrison to place into the net.
Unable to respond and find any form of ascendency, things had felt quite flat for the U’s, who were yet to probe in the final third as the first half petered out.
Demanding a reaction, a double swap was introduced after the break as Brophy and Mpanzu came on to match up Bristol Rovers’ formation.
Soon after the break, Promise Omochere latched and dispossessed the defence, allowing him to scamper forwards and pull the trigger from 20 yards, but Eastwood got down quickly to claim – much to the frustration of the forward, who felt he should have doubled the lead.
Moments later, Southam-Hales’ corner floated to Kilgour at the back post, whose header found an unmarked Harrison on the turn, but United’s goalkeeper was smart to race to the edge of the six-yard box and make his body big to deny. The resulting corner caused havoc as it arrowed on target, with Eastwood showing reflexes to jump and get both gloves to it.
With the possession starting to creep up, the U’s enjoyed decent rhythm during one move on 68 as Liam Bennett and Brophy combined in the overlap down the right, with Kaikai recycling at the other end by cutting back for Mpanzu from 12 yards out, whose shot was vitally blocked.
A good pickpocket from Ben Knight – seconds after coming on – on the 77th minute allowed him to tee up a looming Dom Ball outside of the area, but he got the angles wrong as it shanked wide.
Looking to shut up shop, the Pirates drafted in defender Taylor Moore as they began to be pinned back by Neil Harris’ men. Ultimately, it just wasn’t opening up for them – they were getting the shots away but couldn’t test Luke Southwood between the sticks.
Two minutes from time, a good ball from Bennett was met by a jumping Knight and Ryan Loft, with the latter getting their head to it but not the accuracy as it sailed over the woodwork.
Shortly after the signal of an additional 10 minutes gave the travelling faithful hope, Brophy embarked on a good run down the flank and squared to Kylian Kouassi from yards out, but the Blackpool loanee couldn’t connect with it fully as the hosts cleared their lines.
In the dying embers, Cambridge huffed and puffed but it wasn’t to be their day, with their misery compounded late on as Mamadou Jobe received a second yellow card.
Up next, the U’s take on another familiar face in Charlton Athletic at the Cledara Abbey on Tuesday night (26th August) with a place in the Third Round of the Carabao Cup at stake – be sure to back the boys.
