Cambridge United are delighted to announce the appointment of George Thorne as the Academy’s new Emerging Talent Coach (U14–U21s)...

In his new role, George will work closely with players in both the Youth Development Phase (YDP) and Professional Development Phase (PDP), placing a strong emphasis on individual development and supporting their progression through the Club’s performance pathway.

Academy Manager, Dom Knighton, said, “We are excited to welcome George to our Academy coaching department and our overall staff team.

"Having gone through a thorough interview process we are confident that George can continue to drive the individual development of our young players. His experiences as both a professional footballer and a developing coach will add real value to the environment we are creating at the Academy.”

A former professional footballer, George started his journey at the Cambridge United Academy, before coming through the ranks at West Bromwich Albion, making his Premier League debut for the Baggies as a teenager.

During his career he also represented Portsmouth, Derby County and Oxford United, before later bringing his playing days to a close due to injury.

Having transitioned into coaching, George's career has come full circle as he returns to the place where it all started.
