Bring tinned food to Saturday's game and help support Abbey People

14 February 2022

Next Saturday’s home game against Accrington Stanley is the Mead Plant & Grab Family Stand Day, where U’s supporting families will take over the South Stand for the afternoon…

Families of Academy players, Community Trust participants and Youth Development players can buy an Adult and Child ticket in the stand for just £10 as we aim to fill out what is usually the away end with as many home supporters as possible.

Coinciding with the initiative is our appeal for fans to bring donations for the Abbey People Food Hub, who serve an average of 150 households a week with fresh food and store cupboard essentials, to help where families are struggling to afford enough food.

The period between January and April are the hardest months at the Food Hub as once everyone’s Christmas celebrations are over, a reduction in tinned food donations and the ‘Hungry Gap’ - a period in Spring when hardly any fresh veg grows in the UK, means that the level of fresh food that comes through the Food Hub’s doors also drop significantly.

This means the Food Hub has to rely far more heavily on tinned food to make sure that their visitors still have access to food. This comes at a time when people are struggling to afford to heat their homes, so the food that they can pick up at the Food Hub is crucial, allowing them to spend as much of their income as possible on keeping their homes warm.

This is why we are challenging Cambridge United Fans to bring food donations to the Accrington Stanley match on Saturday 19th February.

U’s fans can bring along any of the following:

  • Tinned vegetables
  • Tinned fruit
  • Tinned fish
  • Tinned meat
  • Jars of pasta and curry sauce
  • Tinned chopped tomatoes
  • Baked beans
  • Tinned soup
  • Long-life milk
  • Tea and coffee

Collection points outside the Abbey Arms, in-front of the Newmarket Road End Turnstiles and outside the South Stand will be in operation so please bring what you can and play your part. The donations will go directly to people in our community.

Cambridge United Community Trust Manager, Sam Gomarsall said, "We are delighted to support this fantastic local charity through the Family Day. Abbey People have been there for the local community over the past two years, running a food hub which provides a community fridge.

"Abbey People are a vital resource for many in the community by providing households in extreme need with additional hot meals, access to sanitary supplies, clothing and school materials for children. I would strongly encourage Cambridge United fans to bring food because it really will make a huge difference."

If you can’t bring any tins with you, you can make a donation to help support Abbey People's work in the community. Text ABBEY followed by your donation amount to 70450 to give that amount.

Texts will cost the donation amount plus one standard network rate message, and you’ll be opting into hearing more from Abbey People. If you would like to donate but don't wish to hear more from us, please text ABBEYNOINFO instead.
