Cambridge United can today confirm the Club has reached an agreement with Colchester United for Jevani Brown who departs the Abbey Stadium.
The 24-year old was picked up by Cambridge United as a free agent following a successful spell with St Neots Town back in August 2017 and the Club have since developed the attacking midfielder into an established player at Football League level.
With Brown moving into the final year of his current contract Cambridge United are satisfied that the approach made by Colchester United meets a realistic value for the player and have therefore accepted the offer, which includes a sell on fee. The alternative would mean potentially losing the player on a free transfer next summer.
Head of Football Ben Strang commented: "Whilst our intention was to head in to the 2019/20 season with Jevani as part of the first team group we obviously recognised that Clubs might come in for him over the summer. After considering and then negotiating on offers made for him over recent days the club felt that this deal represented good value, particularly given the fact that Jevani could have left on a free transfer next summer.
"Whilst ideally we would want to progress players further up the Football League, Colchester's offer was the most attractive financially, reflecting their interest ahead of other interested parties. As with Will Norris this demonstrates that we can successfully source players from local non-league sides, develop them and sell for a profit at the appropriate time.
"As a football staff, we are working hard to strengthen the squad in key areas and are confident of doing so during July. Discussions are at an advanced stage with key targets and we are excited by the potential of these signings."
Head Coach Colin Calderwood added: "We wish Jevani well in his future footballing career. He has obviously done well at the Club and everyone is very grateful for his contribution. A move like this is part and parcel of football business and also obviously reflects well on our recruitment.
"We obviously lose one player but my intention is to develop a team that can achieve more in the upcoming season. We are in positive conversations with a number of potential clubs and players. We will therefore add further players to the group and as always at times like this any recruitment needs to balance speed with quality, as what obviously matters most is making sure we have the best squad we possibly can at the start of August."
Cambridge United would like to thank Jevani for his commitment and efforts during his two years at the Abbey Stadium and wishes him well for the future.
