Cambridge United bounced back with an excellent 0-1 away win over Crewe Alexandra, to make it four clean sheets from five in Sky Bet League Two.
Jabo Ibehre’s second goal of the season earned three precious points for United, as they responded from the disappointing defeat against Barnet.
Both sides lined up unchanged from their previous encounters in Sky Bet League Two, and it was the U’s who began the game the better of the two teams.
Piero Mingoia, George Maris and Jevani Brown all got early shots off as a result of the U’s hard work off the ball to regain possession high up the field, but none could test Crewe keeper Ben Garratt.
As the half wore on, United grew stronger into the match with a well placed header back across goal being clawed away by Garratt before the Crewe keeper was required again a minute later to stop Jevani Brown’s low shot.
However, he was unable to gather Ikpeazu’s drilled effort on 35 minutes which Jabo Ibehre took full advantage of, reacting quickest to tap into an empty net and give Shaun Derry’s men a deserved lead.
The hosts came close to cancelling out that advantage when Eddie Nolan hit the woodwork moments later, before David Forde produced a remarkable save to stop a deflected Chris Dagnall shot before half time which seemed destined for the back of the net.
Crewe returned for the second period and immediately took charge of possession, but Shaun Derry’s men stayed resilient and continued to look a threat on the counter attack.
The U’s Head Coach introduced George Taft to sure up the United defence during the final quarter of the match, and it did the trick as the visitors saw out the game without hitch.
