MATCH PREVIEW | WYCOMBE WANDERERS

MATCH PREVIEW | WYCOMBE WANDERERS

Cambridge United bring their 2016/17 Sky Bet League Two season to a conclusion at Adams Park on Saturday evening, as their play-off chase goes to the final game against Wycombe Wanderers.

Shaun Derry’s men are just one point off the top seven with only the clash against the Chairboys remaining as part of their regular League Two schedule.

The U’s know a win over their fellow play-off hopefuls would give them a chance of extending the season further, but will also need favourable results in the Exeter City, Carlisle or Blackpool fixtures.

United head into the encounter with four wins from their last six League fixtures including last weekend’s victory over Crawley Town at the Cambs Glass Stadium, where Scott Wharton’s first goal for the Club and Luke Berry’s late penalty clichéd three points.

As for tomorrow’s hosts, they too still harbour aims of finishing within the play-off positions come 8pm Saturday night.

Gareth Ainsworth’s side are also just one point outside the top seven but sit two places below the U’s on goal difference. Similar to United they will also need to pick up three points and hope results elsewhere in the division go in their favour.

Adebayo Akinfenwa has once again proven his worth at this level during his debut season for the Chairboys, having scored 14 goals so far making him Wycombe’s leading goal getter this campaign.

Wanderers are unbeaten in their last three League fixtures following wins over Barnet and Doncaster Rovers, before Akinfenwa registered late in last week’s trip to Morecambe to rescue a point.

It was also a last gasp goal from Aaron Pierre which decided the reverse fixture between the sides back in November, with the centre back slamming home from a 95th minute corner to sink the U’s at the Cambs Glass Stadium.

United will be eager to avenge that result and give their play-off ambitions the best possible chance in front of what looks set to be one of the strongest away followings from the Amber Army this season.

Tickets are still available for the clash online here. Cambridge United supporters are reminded this fixture is ALL TICKET.
