MATCH REPORT: MORECAMBE 2 CAMBRIDGE UNITED 0
Cambridge United fell to a disappointing 2-0 defeat at the hands of Morecambe at the Globe Arena in Sky Bet League Two.
The U’s lined up with just one change, Conor Newton replacing Ben Williamson, whilst Barry Corr also took a place up on the bench following 12 months out of the side through injury.
The hosts caused United early problems with Kevin Ellison hitting the side netting within a minute from a shot inside the U’s area, before captain Peter Murphy had a goal ruled out for hand ball on eight minutes.
Paul Mullin hit the foot of the post soon after when one-on-one with Will Norris, before Mingoia had the U’s first shot on target midway through the half, stinging the palms of Barry Roche with a mid-range attempt.
Shaun Derry’s side enjoyed a good ten minute spell, which included Jake Carroll also hitting the woodwork with a header from Luke Berry’s whipping delivering.
However, despite the open nature of the first 45 minutes it remained goalless at the break.
United began the second half brightly with substitute Harrison Dunk narrowly heading over Piero Mingoia’s cross from the right wing.
However, a quickfire brace from Ellison gave the hosts a sizeable lead, with the winger positioned in almost the same position to tap in from close range for both goals.
Looking to graft something from the encounter, Shaun Derry introduced Ben Williamson and Barry Corr to proceedings on the hour mark with the latter making his long awaited return for the U’s.
However, there was very little either could do to get United back into the game with only a long range effort which drifted wide to show for Corr’s efforts. In fact U's shot stopper Will Norris deserved credit for keeping United from a larger defeat with a succession of saves in the final 20 minutes of the match.
