MATCH PREVIEW: MANSFIELD TOWN – AWAY
Cambridge United return to Sky Bet League Two action tomorrow against Mansfield Town at the One Call Stadium.
Following an accomplished 1-0 victory over League One side Shrewsbury Town in the Checkatrade Trophy midweek, the U’s will be hungry to replicate that winning result in Nottinghamshire to lift themselves up the division.
Joe Pigott registered his first competitive goal for the club on Tuesday night and will be hopeful of adding to that tally. Meanwhile new signing Brad Halliday could be in line to make his first appearance in amber and black after joining the U’s on a long-term deal ahead of the transfer deadline.
Shaun Derry will still be without George Maris, Adam McGurk and Harrison Dunk, although all three continue to work themselves closer to fitness following the respective injuries they picked up during the early stages of the season.
Meanwhile, United’s opponents head into the clash in fifth position in Sky Bet League Two, Having already beaten Leyton Orient, Yeovil Town and Newport County so far this season.
Striker Matt Green and midfielder Mitch Rose have both enjoyed fruitful starts to the new campaign in front of goal having bagged three goals each. Although the Stags were unable to notch midweek as they fell to a 2-0 home defeat at the hands of fellow League Two outfit Doncaster Rovers.
The U’s ended their 2015/16 season at the One Call Stadium with a goalless draw against Adam Murray’s side. Mansfield edge the head-to-head records between the sides by 14 wins to 13.
Cambridge United Manager Shaun Derry is expecting a physical test, he said: “We are up against a team who at the moment are very much on the front foot.
“In terms of the way Mansfield play, I think we can expect a quite aggressive encounter. It is a tough place to go and we found that out on the last game the season just gone.”
He continued: “Our midweek win at Shrewsbury gives us a lot of confidence going into the weekend. We had the capability to make a number of changes, which is great because it shows we have a group of players who are all able to pull on the shirt and do the job required when asked to do so.
“It was a very pleasing display and a performance we can take forward.”
