Pre-match Interview: Shaun Derry
Cambridge United Manager Shaun Derry believes the U’s have an “exciting” few weeks coming up as the club approach the business end of the season.
The U’s currently find themselves in 12th position, three points off the all-important top seven with a host of teams chasing play-off ambitions. Whilst the United chief feels there is still plenty to play for, Derry is desperate for his side to continue their progression.
He said: “We wanted to be in contention and we do have exciting run between now and May 7th. We want to have something to play for in the coming weeks.
“This is a forward thinking football club and we have already made strides there is no doubt about that. The progression we have shown has been fantastic. This is just the start and I want it to continue to get better.
“Can we do it this season? Let’s have a right good go, because there is so much football still to be played and we are one of eight or nine teams vying to be part of the play-offs.”
Looking ahead to this weekend’s clash against Exeter City, Derry has asked the U’s to build on the current home form and stick to their principles.
He commented: “We have won the last three games at the Abbey. I made a big deal out of it a few weeks ago saying we need to win at home. The away form in general has been good and the home crowd want to see us continue winning games as well.
“Exeter are a good side but we have given a message to the players that we have to focus on our principles and how we play the game.
“The coaching staff are responsible of producing a game plan that will hopefully get us three points. When we keep our performance level, we are a good team and hopefully we can do that this weekend.”
He continued: “It was a great atmosphere on Tuesday and there is a collective understanding of how much we all needed each other.
“This is a team sport and we need every single person to be a part of it in the coming weeks. Whether that is the players, the coaching staff, the office staff or the community, we all need to be together like we were on Tuesday.”
