“WE WERE RUTHLESS AT THE RIGHT TIMES” SAYS DERRY

POST-MATCH: SHAUN DERRY

Cambridge United Manager Shaun Derry has hailed his side’s “ruthless” performance against Leyton Orient, which saw the U’s secure a 3-1 Sky Bet League Two victory at the Matchroom Stadium.

A brace of goals from Ben Williamson and a debut strike from Jimmy Spencer ensured that United sent a 1,237 strong Amber Army back to Cambridge delighted with three points in the bag.

Speaking to the post-match press, Derry commented: “We can take massive satisfaction and be extremely proud of a performance of that quality.

“I thought all the way from the goalkeeper to the centre forwards, every player had a fantastic afternoon and the substitutes included.

“We prepared a game plan immediately after the game last week, in which we wanted to become far more efficient by playing on the front foot. We were ruthless at the right times today.

Commenting on a stellar display from striker Ben Williamson, who netted twice and assisted for fellow forward Spencer, the U’s boss added: “Ben has produced a number of great performances for us since he was brought to the club, initially on loan and now permanently.

“When he can come up with games like that, he will be big player going forward. To get two goals and help Jimmy get his goal just minutes after coming on, is perfect for our centre forwards.”

Derry admits his focus has already shifted to next Saturday’s return to the Abbey Stadium, as the U’s look to extend their unbeaten run to four games against Dagenham & Redbridge.

“As much as I’m delighted with today’s performance, my mind set has already moved forward to next week’s game against Dagenham.

“We have 51 points to play for and as we count down the games, bigger and better performances are required.

“We set ourselves high standards and when we drop below, I let the boys know but when we produce performances like today everyone gets a pat on the back and we look forward.”
