U’S CAPTURE SAM BEASANT ON A ONE-YEAR DEAL

Beasant signs until the end of 2015/16 season

Cambridge United have completed the signing of goalkeeper Sam Beasant until the end of the 2015/16 Sky Bet League Two season.

Beasant arrives at the Abbey Stadium on a one-year deal after achieving a Football League debut with Stevenage last season, where he featured in a further eight appearances for the Hertfordshire side which included two clean sheets.

Initially plying his trade in non-league with Maidenhead United, Billericay Town and Woking, the shot stopper joins the U’s hopeful of additional Football League opportunities.

Son of former England goalkeeper Dave Beasant, the 27-year old provides Richard Money further strength in the goalkeeper position by bolstering the Cambridge United Manager’s options.

Speaking to Cambridge-United.co.uk and pleased to have linked up with the U’s, Beasant said: “The talent that was already here and has been brought in over the summer, as well as the cup run last season, are all great examples of the club moving forward and I am excited to jump on board with that.

“I completed my deal at Stevenage at the end of the season so contacted Jez (George, Chief Executive) as I’d been on trial here four years ago, and spoke to him to find out what the situation was at Cambridge.

“He told me that there was a potential chance for me and when I saw the great prospects that the club have, was keen to take up the opportunity.”

He continued: “High profile names like Barry Corr, Keith Keane and Luke Berry all played a part in my decision, and then amongst them names are Leon Legge and Mark Roberts who I’ll look forward to working with closely.

“I never had the chance to play with Mark at Stevenage but everybody at the club spoke very highly of him, so I’m especially looking forward to that.

“I have played against Cambridge and it has always been a great place to come to. With the Amber Army behind you and now the development taking place, I’m pleased to have been given the chance to settle down here.”

The club are also close to agreeing a contract extension with 21-year old goalkeeper Will Norris, and are currently negotiating a loan deal that would see the youngster gain valuable game time for the forthcoming campaign. An announcement is expected to be made in the near future.
