Community Trust supporting local families through Holiday Activities & Food

9 February 2022

Circus Skills, Samba Drumming & Glow in the Dark Dodgeball were just some of the exciting activities at Cambridge United Community Trust’s Christmas Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme working in partnership with the amazing local charity, Abbey People...

The HAF programme was funded by the Department for Education and Cambridgeshire County Council and took place over 3 days from 20th-22nd December. The funding allowed over 50 children on free school meals from the Abbey Ward to take part in the programme which combined workshops, activities and food in what was an action-packed schedule of activities.

Research has shown that the school holidays can be pressure points for some families. For some children this can lead to a holiday experience gap, with children from low-income households being: less likely to access organised out-of-school activities, more likely to experience ‘unhealthy holidays’ in terms of nutrition and physical health & more likely to experience social isolation.

Simon Wall, Community Engagement Manager at the Community Trust, said: “This was an amazing opportunity for the young people of East Barnwell to take part in three days of activities so close to Christmas. I am delighted that we could work together with Abbey People and the County Council to put this on. We know how much of a difference this provision made to so many families during the school holidays.”
