MIDFIELDER MAY SIGNS FOR THE U’S

Adam May Agrees Initial One Year Deal

4 September 2020

Cambridge United are pleased to announce the signing of Adam May who has joined the Club on an initial one year deal with the option of a further year.

The 22-year old, who operates in a central position, will further bolster the midfield options for Mark Bonner’s side.

Having come through the Portsmouth Academy, May made 30 appearances for Pompey during his time at Fratton Park and also gained further first-team experience with spells at Sutton and Aldershot.

He played 13 times during a loan spell with eventual promotion winners Swindon Town last term, scoring one goal. He spent the final part of the campaign on loan at National League high flyers Boreham Wood before the season was cut short due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Having been out of contract during the summer, May, who has previously worked under U’s Assistant Head Coach Gary Waddock, was invited to join the Club on trial late last month. Having impressed on the training field and already featured at the Abbey in United’s final pre-season contest against Ipswich Town, the midfielder has now confirmed an extension to his stay with the U’s on a permanent contract.

Pleased to have penned his deal, May said: “I was always trusting in my ability and that I’d be able to find a Club. I’m very happy that will be with Cambridge United.

“I know Gary Waddock really well and have worked under him before, so when I was asked to come in for a trial, I really jumped at the opportunity. Mark Bonner is a young manager and the way he has spoken about this season, made me really excited to be a part of that.

“It’s felt like a long time away with the combination of the pandemic and finding a new Club, so I’m really happy to get this over the line. The main aim for me is to try and get plenty of games under my belt. I’ve struggled with match minutes in the last couple of years and I want that to change here so that I can do what I can for the team.”

U’s Head Coach Mark Bonner added: “We’ve known throughout our recruitment process this summer that we needed to add another in that central midfield position, and Adam is an excellent fit who brings a different type of creative skillset than the competition for those places. He arrives at the Club at a good age, with plenty to prove but also with the potential to play at a higher level.

“We knew what we were bringing in when we invited him in for a trial period, having got a good working relationship with Gary (Waddock), developed previously at Aldershot and Portsmouth. Now that Adam’s been in working with us in training for over a week, our expectations were confirmed and we’ve liked what we have seen from him in the flesh.

“He knows there is plenty of work to do, but signing players with the fire and energy that Adam has is important to us.”

Adam May will wear Cambridge United’s number 19 shirt for the 2020/21 Sky Bet League Two season.
