MENTAL HEALTH | SUPPORT U'S: "IT'S REALLY SPECIAL!"

Youth Team Mental Health Ambassador Harvey Steel visits weekly football session

6 February 2020

Earlier this week, Youth Team Mental Health Ambassador Harvey Steel went along to join participants at Cambridge United’s “Support U’s” Mental Health football session and Good Mood Café – Find out more about the project which aims to improve both physical and mental health in men aged 18-65.

The “Support U’s” weekly mental health football session is available for males throughout the 2019/20 football season, and provides an opportunity for those who participate to take part in some physical activity whilst building relationships, being part of a team and boosting self-confidence.

Being able to offer support to fans of the football club and wider community is a key element of Cambridge United’s Mental Health Charter and aim of being a mentally healthy football club.

The Charter, which was announced earlier this season, included the introduction of Mental Health ambassadors right across the football department of the Club, to lead the discussion on mental health through from the first team, academy and women’s side.

The Support U’s sessions are from 11-12pm on Wednesday morning and take place at the Abbey Leisure Complex, CB5 8NT. This is then followed up with a Good Mood Café back at the Abbey Stadium, where participants are invited for a tea and coffee as well as being provided a safe, friendly environment to discuss their own personal experiences of mental health.

Participants at the sessions are also encouraged to get together outside of them at one of CPSL Mind’s Good Mood Cafes.

If you have any questions about the ‘Support U’s’ weekly football session, please email Cambridge United Community Trust’s Mental Health Officer Darryl Coakley at daz.coakley@cambridge-united.co.uk.
