AstraZeneca Renews Community Sponsorship and Active Science Programme

18 September 2019

Cambridge United are delighted to announce that, thanks to an extension of the Club’s partnership with AstraZeneca, our home will continue to be known as the Abbey Stadium.

As part of AstraZeneca’s continued Community Sponsorship, the Company has once again gifted the naming rights of the stadium back to the Club to ensure the traditional name remains.

The Abbey name has been part of the fabric of the Club since its formation in 1912, so we are delighted that the renewal of the partnership continues to honour that tradition.  The Community partnership with AstraZeneca will continue to support community initiatives including addressing social isolation amongst the elderly, educational support in the Abbey Ward, obesity, literacy and digital access and adult education.

AstraZeneca has also agreed to extend its Active Science partnership with our Community Trust – a programme which over the past three and a half years has engaged with more than 3,000 local school children, inspiring them to understand science through the medium of sport and aspire to be our city’s next generation of scientists. This programme is part of AstraZeneca’s broader commitment to STEM engagement within the region, with a focus on life sciences.

Steve Twait, Vice-President of Alliance and Integration Management, AstraZeneca said: “We are delighted to renew our sponsorship of these programmes for another year. The Active Science programme promotes science in schools through sport, and, like many of our community initiatives, enables colleagues from across our company in Cambridge to get directly involved in the delivery of the programme.  Having seen the tremendous work the Club and Trust do across the community, it is a pleasure and privilege to work together on several really great community initiatives.”

Nick Fairbairn, Head of Partnerships, Cambridge United Football Club added: “We are thrilled to renew our partnership with AstraZeneca. Not only does it further strengthen our ties with a world renowned, world class company, but crucially, it also ensures we are staying true to our roots by safeguarding the Abbey name without sacrificing important commercial revenue.”

Ashley Dyer, Head of Primary School Education at Cambridge United Community Trust said: “We’re delighted that AstraZeneca are continuing their support of the Active Science programme, which engages 600 primary school children annually in our local community. By using sport and exercise as a tool for learning science in this exciting way, the programme has helped make science relevant and purposeful for young people. We are looking forward to seeing even more engage with the programme in the upcoming year.”
