Harrison Dunk didn’t hide his disappointment following Tuesday’s defeat to Crewe Alexandra, and says the U’s players must react very quickly in order to put it right.

United’s current longest serving player was frank when assessing the 2-0 loss at the Alexandra Stadium, and was not hesitant in holding his hands up on behalf of the players for a lacklustre night’s work.

“It was both a very disappointing performance and result. We didn’t adapt to the game at all, we never pressed, we never passed as well as we can, we didn’t create as much as we can. Over it was just very disappointing.

“It felt as if we were starting to get a grip of the game in the first half, but goals certainly changes games. We certainly weren’t at our best before the first goal, but as soon as they scored we never reacted.

“And then the second goal, is bad defending all around and summed up a very bad day at the office. All over the pitch not just in defence, it just wasn’t good enough.

“We’ve (the players) let not just the Head Coach down, but the fans and the whole club down really. We have to hold our hands up and say we were nowhere near good enough.

“The one thing we can do is step up and react quickly. That feels a long time away to next Tuesday, and then in our next League game but we have to put it right.”

Dunk’s spot at left back in place of the suspended Jake Carroll saw him regain a place in the U’s starting 11 for the first time in the League from some time, having recovered from a leg injury.

However, he took very little consolation and commented: “I can take a very, very small positive from that personally.

“Honestly though, I would rather be sat in the stand watching the team win than play a game and lose like that. I’ve said before it’s been a very frustrating season so far for me, and I want to kick start that.

“Hopefully that starts with next Tuesday, which is an important game and then the results coming up after that point.”
