U'S SIGN ELECTRIC FORWARD ADE AZEEZ FROM PARTICK THISTLE FOR UNDISCLOSED FEE

Cambridge United have fought off competition from other League Two clubs to land the signing of exciting Partick Thistle forward Ade Azeez for an undisclosed fee.

The 23-year old switches to the Cambs Glass Stadium until at least June 2019, injecting additional pace and power to the U's attack ahead of the 2017/18 Sky Bet League Two season.

The Amber Army may remember Azeez during his time with AFC Wimbledon, where he featured over 80 times between 2014-2016, and scored against the U's at the Cambs Glass Stadium in January 2016.

Ade went on to play an influential role in the Dons' Sky Bet League Two play-off success that season, winning the decisive penalty kick in the latter stages of the 2015/16 Wembley final against Plymouth Argyle.

More recently Azeez has plied his trade in the SPL for Partick Thistle alongside fellow U's summer recruit David Amoo.

Delighted to be returning to English football with United, Azeez said: "I have driven down from Scotland with a big smile on my face because I'm really excited to move to Cambridge United.

"There has always been a really good feel about this Football Club whenever I have played here in the past. As soon as I had a conversation with Shaun Derry and other staff from the Club, I knew that this was the right place to come.

"I'm quick, play off the shoulder and like to play in behind the defence to cause as many problems as I can. Hopefully I can get a lot of goals for this Club.

"I actually scored against Cambridge United the last time I played here, but I'm looking forward to plenty of occasions going forward where I can score at the right end this time!

"I've had a few weeks training up in Scotland already, so I'm ready to go and will work hard to be in the right shape for the start of the new season."

Head Coach Shaun Derry added: "We're delighted to welcome Ade to Cambridge United.

"He's a player we have been keeping a close eye on for many months now. He brings a completely different dimension to our forward options and we're sure he will thrive in the Club's environment."

Azeez began his career when joining Charlton Athletic at 14, before breaking through the ranks and signing his first professional contract in 2011. As a youngster he built up his Football League experience through loan spells with Wycombe Wanderers, Leyton Orient, Torquay United and Dagenham & Redbridge.

Head of Football Operations Ben Strang concluded: "We're sure that Ade will become a player that our fans really take to. He has the attributes to excite our supporters and put the team on the front foot.

"We had to fight off competition from other teams within our league to secure his signing and we're delighted that he sees his future with Cambridge United."

The Amber Army will be able to watch the first exclusive interview with Azeez across the U's official Facebook and Twitter accounts from 10am tomorrow morning.

Ade Azeez will take to the Cambs Glass Stadium for the first time during the pre-season friendly against Norwich City on Saturday 15th July. Tickets for all the U's pre-season fixtures are available online by clicking here.
