U’S BOSS SHAUN DERRY RELISHING HOME RETURN AGAINST CARLISLE UNITED

Cambridge United Head Coach Shaun Derry is thrilled to be getting off the mark on home soil against Carlisle United and the opportunity of playing for points at the Cambs Glass Stadium.

Whilst the U’s Boss recognises the importance of pre-season fixtures, Derry says there really is no better scenario than battling it out in competitive action against a strong side like the Cumbrians tomorrow afternoon.

He said: “We are looking forward to getting back home, I certainly am. The home games that we have had in pre-season have served a purpose in terms of bringing in the new players, and getting them used to their new surroundings.

“But this what it is all about. Playing for points!

“It’s another good game, last week we faced play-off finalists and this week it’s play-off semi-finalists. Carlisle were equally close to getting promoted last year, so we know it will be hard game but we have to back ourselves and look forward to the game.

“We have had some mightily close games against Carlisle United in the past two seasons and I see no different this weekend.

“It’s a new season and a new opportunity for our players on the home soil of our stadium. If we can transfer our home form to be better than what it was last year then we’ll be in a strong position. That is the challenge for us and we’ll need the full backing once again of our fantastic supporters.”

United go into the fixture with an almost full strength squad, and only Brad Halliday likely to miss the encounter as the full back continues to recover from appendicitis.

Derry feels the current good health of the group is a major boost and if sustained will become an important factor in a successful campaign.

He added: “We have had a pre-season that has kept clear of injuries, which is testament to the way we approach the training sessions and the feedback we have received from the players.

“We certainly want that to continue because we did have that real hindrance last year, with so many players unavailable. To go into this weekend’s game with everyone except Brad Halliday available, is a very big positive.”
