DERRY TAKES POSITIVES FROM OPENING DAY POINT

POST-MATCH: SHAUN DERRY

Cambridge United Manager Shaun Derry assessed the positives from a hard fought point following a 1-1 draw with Barnet at the Cambs Glass Stadium to kick off the new campaign.

Whilst admitting the U’s never quite hit their straps against the Bees, the United boss feels his side showed good heart to take what they could from the game by clinching a point.

He said: “We were expecting a better performance, more chances on goal and to be more clinical around the box but unfortunately we didn’t quite get that, however we have started the season unbeaten and that is a positive.

“Fair credit to Barnet and the substitutions that Martin Allen implemented because it made the game extremely difficult for us, but we hung in there well and move forward with the point on the board.

“We would have liked to have given everyone a performance to go home with smiles on their faces, but when you look around at the other results in the division you can see that there was a slight bit of opening day tension.

“It is therefore important that when you don’t win, then you don’t lose. In the end we ground out a result from the game to claim a point.

“There are still 45 more games to played before the end of the season, and we have a fantastic match coming up on Tuesday night in the EFL Cup against Sheffield Wednesday to look forward to.

“So we won’t be too downbeat, we’ll learn what we can from this game and move on.”
