Post-Match Reaction from Richard Money
Cambridge United Manager Richard Money felt this afternoon’s 1-0 victory over Stevenage FC at the Abbey Stadium was just reward for a persistent performance from the U’s.
Following a string of United chances and a surge from the home side to clinch an important three points, Harrison Dunk struck late to extend their unbeaten run to three games ahead of a busy schedule of games in Sky Bet League Two fixtures across the next seven days.
Following the clash, Money praised his side’s determination to secure the win, commenting: “There is big relief amongst the group and for the crowd and I think the result was a reward for persistence.
“It was a reward not only for the team but for the supporters as well who stuck with us.
“I don’t think there is any doubt that if we come off the pitch at the end not winning, then we would probably be saying what more do you need to do to score. Certainly in the last 20 minutes the pressure was building.
“We had 22 crosses, 18 shots on goal, 10 of which were on target, which I think tells the story.”
With United pushing for the winning goal during the second half, Money sent strike partnership Jordan Chiedozie and Rory Gaffney into action, with the latter making his home debut ten months after signing for the club and in some fashion.
The U’s boss was highly complementary of both players’ performances, and believes there is food for thought moving forwards.
Money said: “The biggest bonus of the day was the two boys up front, Jordan Chiedozie and Rory Gaffney.
“Jordan has missed so much through injury and we let him go to Braintree on loan to gather game time. Certainly at Hartlepool last week, he looked the most dangerous threat we had and again this weekend he played very well.
“We have had to wait a long time for Rory, but I think in the 15 minutes that he played he showed us all what he’s about. Rory looks to have a knack for goals, I think he has a real goal scorer’s instinct.
“The shot that forced a good save from Stevenage’s goalkeeper at the end of the game was by far from an easy strike. He managed to keep on target really well, and in the end he has delivered a terrific ball into the far post which Harrison tucked away.
“We now have a few combinations that could potentially whet the appetite a little for the weeks to come, with Corr and Gaffney or Corr and Chiedozie.”
