REPORT: UNITED U18 2 SOUTHEND U18 3

U’s fall to marginal defeat against Shrimpers

Cambridge United Under 18’s fell to a narrow 3-2 defeat at home to  Southend Utd team on Tuesday afternoon at Clare College Sports Ground.

A slow start and some poor individual defending saw the U's concede three goals in the first 25 minutes giving themselves a mountain to climb. Despite the deficit, United played some bright football going forward with Leon Davies providing great width on the right flank and creating a number of goal scoring opportunities.

Jordan Brown got on the end of a great cross just before half time but sadly saw his volley sailed over the bar. As half time approached the U’s did threaten to get back into the game but reached half time 3-0 behind.

The players showed great determination and desire after this poor start to initially keep themselves in the game and then to fight back in the second half. Shortly before the hour mark some great play in midfield between Dylan Williams and Thomas Knowles put Jordan Brown through on goal, who finished well past the Southend keeper.

The home side continued to show great team spirit and created more chances with Ryan Harnwell and Jordan Brown looking a real threat going forward.

With five minutes remaining Josh Emmins got himself into a great position out wide, delivering an excellent left wing cross for Jordan Brown to finish well on the half volley for his second of the game.

The lads continued to press hard for an equaliser but sadly time ran out. The U’s next play AFC Wimbledon away from home on Saturday 24th October.

Meanwhile the FA Youth Cup First Round draw was made yesterday afternoon, with the U’s drawn at home against Hayes & Yeading.
