Newmarket Road End Fan Zone plans announced

5 October 2022

Cambridge United is pleased to announce plans to create a Fan Zone for the Newmarket Road End which will be located in the rear of the existing Thrifty site…

The area will provide much needed engagement and entertainment space for supporters within the Newmarket Road End, which would also see the installation of pop-up bars, serving alcohol.

The Club has engaged the Safety Advisory Group in relation to its plans, which have been positively received and it will now work in collaboration with all members of the SAG to move the project forward over the coming months.

The Club is exceptionally grateful for the support of Cambridge Fans United, who have agreed to part fund the project, with the remaining costs being paid from Club and Commercial funds subject to the approval of final quotes.

CEO Alex Tunbridge said, “During the past six months we have made significant strides in improving the Matchday experience around the stadium, however, until now, we have faced significant challenges in improving facilities for supporters in the Newmarket Road End.

“The purchase of the Thirfty site as part of the wider stadium purchase from Grosvenor has provided us with the opportunity to expand the footprint of the stadium on Matchdays, which is crucial to us moving forwards.

“We estimate the project to take three months and hope to be able to open the area to supporters in the new year.

“Our thanks go to CFU for their financial support, Thrifty for their cooperation and our supporters for their continued patience.”

Andrew Stephen, CFU chair said, "CFU are delighted to be partners in an important project which both helps the club and improves facilities for fans in the Newmarket Road End, where much of the stadium's atmosphere comes from.

"These are exciting times for us and for the club. Fan engagement and representation has never been better or more important. We are United in Endeavour. Long may it continue."

Vice-chair Ben Phillips added, "We are here to represent our fellow fans as a supporters group, we are pleased to have a partnership with the football club that allows us to support working on long term projects that benefit fellow fans of the club together.

"We have heard feedback from fans that wanted better provisions and are pleased that the football club are willing to continue to improve the Matchday experience for fans. We are excited to sponsor the new fanzone in the Newmarket Road End which will enhance the Matchday experience of fans in this stand going forward."

Progress updates relating to the project will be issued to supporters in due course.
