Ian Darler receives Long Service Award

5 October 2021

Cambridge United Stadium Head Groundsman and Stadium Manager, Ian Darler, has received a Long Service Award from the EFL after 43 years of service at the Club…

After starting out as Head Groundsman in 1979 at the age of 19 - becoming the youngest ever to take on that role in the Football League – Darler went on to add the role of Stadium Manager and Safety Officer, in addition to helping the Commercial Team selling advertising, including taking a lead role in securing the sponsorship of Mick George, which continues today.

Darler was awarded a BEM in the Queen’s Birthday Honours 2020, is a member of the Cambridge United Hall of Fame, has his own book, Life's A Pitch – A Groundsman’s Tale, and is a tireless and committed fundraiser for charity, having started up the Cambridge Charity Fundraisers.

Speaking about the latest in his long line of accolades, Ian said, “I would like to thank the EFL for this award, which has come as a complete surprise.

“I can honestly say that the 43 years I have been at Cambridge United have flown by and it has given me the opportunity to look back at the roles I have covered during that period and the awards I have been fortunate enough to have won.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the staff and volunteers I have worked with over the years and to all the companies who have donated thousands of pounds of materials, services and products to me which have helped keep the stadium safe and looking smart for its age.”
