Worman signs second pro deal

4 June 2021

Cambridge United is delighted to announce that Ben Worman has signed a new one-year contract with a one-year option...

The 19-year-old has risen through the ranks at the Abbey Stadium, starting out at the Club’s Academy before becoming the U’s youngest ever player to take part in a competitive First Team fixture in November 2017 at the age of 16.

“It is a delight to still be here for another year,” Woman said. “I have been here since I was eight years old and I am looking forward to next season now.

“My game-time has been limited but it’s a good thing that the Club want me here so I am willing to show them what I can do and take the opportunities that come my way.”

Head Coach Mark Bonner said, “Despite a challenging season for Ben, we were pleased with his progress throughout the year and his ability to positively affect training sessions. He is a robust, tough and resilient character who has handled his setbacks well and made the most of a difficult year.

“Like many young professionals, the pandemic has hit this age bracket hard reflected by the lack of game time due to the problematic nature of attracting loans, organising games and engaging with the non-league pyramid due to its uncertain and then prematurely concluded season.

“Ben deserves the opportunity to continue developing and challenging for game time in the First Team squad. Whilst aiming towards this goal, game exposure is vital for him next season, and therefore a loan at some point is possible to enable that competitive football that he needs to develop closer to the team.

“Ben’s conclusion to this season in the National League with Weymouth was an encouraging way to end the season and it proves that he can compete and perform at that level, playing in some good games and atmospheres throughout that time. I am looking forward to seeing him continue pushing and raising his levels as the bar continues to go up.”

Worman’s new contract is his second for the Club, after signing his initial professional deal in 2018.
