Cambridge United extended their unbeaten run at the Abbey Stadium to five games, with a 1-1 draw against Oldham Athletic in Sky Bet League Two.
The U’s moved ten points clear of the bottom two as Jevani Brown’s goal a minute after half time cancelled out an early own goal by Harrison Dunk.
United lined up with an unchanged side from their previous League outing and the 0-2 win over Grimsby seven days earlier.
With the wind swirling through the Abbey Stadium it made for tricky conditions. United fell short after 11 minutes when a heavily wind affected corner by Gevaro Nepomuceno caught Harrison Dunk in an awkward positon and the full back headed beyond his own keeper to open the scores for the visitors.
Colin Calderwood’s men failed to make their impact on the game prior to half time in what was a poor opening 45 minutes. Only a solitary Reggie Lambe attempt two minutes before the break which Daniel Iverson caught with ease, to show for their offensive efforts although they could be commended for their stubbornness defensively.
United wasted no time in the second half though and were level inside two minutes of the restart. A long ball forward by Mitov was flicked on by Ibehre directly into the path of Jevani Borwn, who kept his composure brilliantly to run in from 40 yards and slot in the equaliser past Iverson.
George Maris rolled away from his marker on the hour and laid a pass off for Lambe on 18 yards out. The winger’s right footer was well struck and looked to have the beating of Iverson but missed the target as the U’s threat of a second goal increased.
Afolayan spurned a great chance to regain the lead for the visitor when a Latics’ corner fell at the feet of the forward in space but he drilled wide with Mitov’s goal gaping.
Space opened up for U’s sub Coulson to attack on 82 minutes, but having carried the ball into the Oldham area his shot was then smothered up by Iverson. It proved to be United’s final opening as they settled for a valuable point.
