Cambridge United were held to a 0-0 home draw with Morecambe in spite of an extremely promising display at the Cambs Glass Stadium
Despite registering 25 shots at goal and a glittering Football League debut from Jevani Brown, the U’s secured a point to make it consecutive fixtures unbeaten in the League.
United, who lined up with five changes from the side that began the game against Crawley, were immediately on to the front foot when Ikpeazu played a well weighted ball through to strike partner Azeez, who fired wide inside a minute.
Ikpeazu too came close twice, with the big forward drilling a pair of left footed efforts narrowly over the bar.
However, it was Azeez who was finding more openings on goals, helped largely by an exciting performance from Jevani Brown at the tip of the U’s midfield diamond, featuring for the first time in competitive action donning amber and black.
It remained goalless at the break, despite a very bright 45 minutes from Shaun Derry’s men who had ensured keeper David Forde remained largely untested.
The match continued in similar vein after half time, with Uche Ikpeazu denied the opportunity to break the deadlock following a goal saving challenge by Shrimps centre back Steven Old, shortly after Azeez had a one-on-one shot saved by Roche.
United continued to press, but a dangerous George Maris cross could not be turned in Ikpeazu inside the final quarter of the game, whilst Brown fractions away from a sublime strike whipping into the top right corner from a late free kick.
Nevertheless, Shaun Derry’s men were made to settle for a point and were applauded from the field for their efforts by a buoyant Amber Army who had backed them from the very first whistle.
