Welcome to the Abbey

Andrew Pincher - Brentford, Saturday 8th May 1999

rule

Andy Pincher Only a small percentage of the people who play football actually get the satisfaction of winning a Championship. This afternoon one set of players will join that elite group, knowing that over the course of the season they have proved to be the best in their Division. Both Clubs have deservedly led the way for much of the season and along with Cardiff City, have provided an enthralling contest for the title, which will now be decided on this, the final day of the season.

Thoughts, however, are already turning to next season. Season Ticket and Match Day admission prices for the 1999-2000 season were announced last week and Season Tickets will go on sale from Monday. Current Season Ticket holders will be receiving their renewal forms within the next few days, but application forms are available today in the Ticket Office, Club Shop and around the ground. We are once again offering a 'Children's Special' Season Ticket for just £40. This provides excellent value for money and has proved very popular this season. The early purchase discount will apply to all Season Tickets purchased on or before 12 noon on Saturday, June 5th 1999.

Pre-season friendlies are in the process of being arranged and will be published as and when they are confirmed. To stay in touch with all the news from the Club over the summer months you can call our Abbey Update Clubcall service or access our web-site on the Internet. Please note, however, that the prefix for our Clubcall number will change as from July 1st 1999 from 0891 to 09068. The number at present is 0891 555 885 and will therefore change to 09068 555 885.

The unsavoury events before and after the Peterborough game attracted a lot of press attention, but the relationships between the two Clubs remains as good as ever. An example of this, and one which wouldn't warrant much media coverage, was the gesture made by Barry Fry to Roy McFarland following our promotion. Barry was at our reserve game against West Ham the evening following our win at Rochdale and dropped in a bottle of champagne for Roy to congratulate him on his success, A nice touch.

Whilst Roy McFarland and the players will rightly be receiving the plaudits for an outstanding season, I would like to record my appreciation to people behind the scenes who have worked extremely hard, especially over the last couple of months. Thank you to Mark, Lisa, Diane and Sian, all the Match Day staff and in particular, Bill Ball, Roger Sulman and Colin Lawrence who do excellent work throughout the season. A special mention also for Steve Greenall, who will fittingly be at the game today. The list goes on ...

Last Saturday we made history as our Youth Team's 12 noon kick-off against Brighton meant that we played in the last ever South East Counties League match. As from next season The Football League will be organising Youth Football for professional Clubs in a new format. They are also hoping to operate a similar system for reserve team football. On Tuesday night we will play our final reserve game of the season away against Tottenham Hotspur. The match, which will be played at St. Albans City's ground, kicks-off at 7.30pm.

Amid all the excitement and tension of this afternoon can I politely remind you to please keep off the pitch at the end of the game. If this request is adhered to then both acts of supporters will get the opportunity to applaud their respective teams at the end of the game.

It seems like only yesterday that we were opening the new season with a 1-0 victory at Torquay. Time flies when you're having fun. Roll on August!
