When the fixtures wore announced at the start of the season, this particular fixture was the one which immediately caught the eye. Not only was it the local derby at The Abbey, but after considering the expectations of both Clubs and their respective supporters prior to the season commencing, it was also likely to be an important clash between two sides pushing for promotion. It now looks set to be a cracking game.
In terms of local rivalry, Peterborough United are one-up having won the fixture at London Road earlier this season, but we will all be hoping for a repeat of last season's match here when Michael Kyd's 20-yard strike earned all three points. Despite the expected local rivalry between the fans, there is an excellent relationship between the staff at all levels. The friendly banter, though, regularly exists with BBC Radio Cambridgeshire's Saturday Phone-in providing the medium. BBC Radio Cambridgeshire, who provide excellent coverage of both Clubs, will be here as usual having also presented another of their shows from the ground earlier today in an attempt to capture the atmosphere during the build-up to the game. Both Clubs are fortunate that Andy Harper and his team take such a great interest in not only covering our games, but also helping to promote us both within the local community. The Brentford fixture was another one which caught the eye at the start of the season and its appeal has increased more and more as the season has progressed. The match, which is our last game of the season, is all-ticket and tickets are presently on sale between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday. We will also be open next Saturday morning between 9.30am and 12noon. Please note that no tickets will be available on the day of the game. On Wednesday we again lost the Swansea City fixture due to a waterlogged pitch at The Vetch. Unfortunately both the team and the supporters were yet again either there or well on their way to South Wales after the pitch had passed inspections at 9.30am and 12 noon. At 2.30pm I received a phone call to say that since the 12 noon inspection they had had a lot of rain and another inspection would be held at 4.30pm. The Away Travel Coach was informed as they pressed on with their journey, others travelling in cars may not have known. At 3.40pm I received a call to say the match had been postponed and then it was a case of informing as many people who were travelling as possible. I can quite understand the supporters' frustration, many of whom will have taken time off work to attend the game, and as a Club we can only sympathise. I would like to see some form of standard policy put into place to regulate the times of pitch inspections in order to improve communication and to avoid confusion and people wasting their time travelling - I know that an some occasions the longer you delay the inspection the more likely the pitch will become playable, but when you have to travel four or more hours to get to the game you would rather have it called off before you set off. We are not the only Club to suffer under these circumstances and won't be the last. At the lime of writing the game has yet to be re-arranged, although it may have to be either this Thursday or the following Thursday. When the date is confirmed it will be on our Abbey Update line 0891 555885 and all the usual media sources. Today we welcome Jack Taylor from The Football League who will be presenting Ian Darler with his Nationwide Groundsman of the Year award for Division Three. Despite the Youth Team playing at The Abbey on Tuesday evening in heavy rain, I'm sure you'll agree that lan, Trevor, Kevin and Wally have yet again provided an excellent surface for this afternoon's encounter. Finally, on Wednesday evening we are entertaining West Ham United in our final home Avon Insurance Combination league game of the season, We are again admitting accompanied children free of charge, with adults paying £3. We had an excellent response to a similar offer for the games against Arsenal and Chelsea Reserves when we had crowds of over 1,000 for both fixtures. The match kicks-off at 7.00pm, with both the North Terrace and Main Stand being open. Andrew Pincher |
