In the last few weeks the headlines have been dominated with news stories relating to Trevor Benjamin. Just two hours before our last home game against Hull City Trevor put pen to paper on a new contract, committing him to the Club until June 2002. Then on Wednesday he made both front and back page headlines for different reasons, The back page dealt with his impending suspension after accumulating his fifth booking of the season at Barnet, for which we are awaiting confirmation from the Football Association. It is likely that Trevor will miss the trip to Swansea City on March 30th.
The front-page story dealt with alleged racial abuse he received at Exeter City earlier this month. Two home supporters were arrested by the police during the game after follow Exeter fans reported them for their behaviour. Whilst Trevor has remained low-key about the incident, PC Trevor George alerted our local press to the incident to ensure a similar response should the situation arise at The Abbey. Whilst the Club in general works hard to eradicate any form of racial abuse, or indeed foul and abusive language, it can only be fully stamped out with the help of our supporters. If you hear of such unwelcome behaviour at The Abbey, report it to a steward or a police officer and he or she will deal with it accordingly. Thank you for your co-operation. Hopefully by now many of you will have seen the new 'Amber & Black' television programme on local cable channel, Red TV. Whilst it has not always been shown at the scheduled time of 8.00pm, the first two shows have been excellent and have been worth the wait. They have provided a good insight into what goes on behind the scenes at the Club, also featuring interviews with Roy McFarland, the coaching staff, players and backroom staff. I know that the programme has been mentioned in the 'PRofile' section of the programme and I'm sure that both the Red team and George Morton of Andrew McCulloch have been justly praised by Graham for their endeavours in producing the programme. However, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Graham Eales for the efforts he has put into getting the idea off the ground. Graham can take full credit on behalf of the Club for the whole project and with the co-operation of everyone at the Club it can become a programme that everyone con be justly proud of. Thanks to Colin Faiers I can now reveal some interesting statistics comparing the current season with that of the last one. Already this season we have more points than we had in total at the end of last season and with 57 goals, have also scored just six less than the total for last season. By 2.00pm today we will also have exceeded the number of supporters through the turnstiles than for the whole of last season and we are forecast to crash through the 100,000 barrier for the first time for some years before the end of this season. Don't forget that the games against Cardiff City, Peterborough United and Brentford are all-ticket and tickets must be purchased in advance of the games. With this in mind, the Ticket Office will be open on Saturday mornings on Saturday, 27th March, Saturday, 17th April and May 1st 1999 between 9.30am and 12 noon as well as during normal office hours and at home games. On Thursday, 25th March 1999 the Youth Team are entertaining Japanese Under-18 champions Osaka at The Abbey with kick-off at 2.00pm. Admission is free. Thursday is also transfer deadline day, so it could be a very eventful afternoon. Once again we have signed up with Premium Credit for next season to enable supporters to purchase their Season Tickets by taking advantage of the credit facilities they offer. A Season Ticket can be paid in instalments over six months and allows the cost to be spread throughout the first half of the season. Whilst Season Ticket prices have yet to be announced, anyone wishing to know further information about the Premium Credit Scheme in the meantime can contact me for further details. Andrew Pincher |
