Welcome to the Abbey

Andrew Pincher - Southend United, Saturday 27th February 1999

rule

Despite having one of the best disciplinary records in the Division, and being current holders of the Fair Play Award, we have now got to face up to the fact that we will be missing three key players through suspension next Saturday at Exeter. Jamie Campbell's caution at Walsall was his fifth this season, whilst Neil Mustoe's at Leyton Orient was his eighth of the campaign and then to cap it all Andy Duncan received his marching orders at Brisbane Road. We expect all three players only to be unavailable for the trip to Devon, although at the time of writing I have yet to receive confirmation of the suspensions for Mustoe and Duncan.

Following comments reported to have been made by Anne Campbell MP in the Cambridge Evening News, Members of the Board, Staff and Committee Members of the CUSA met with Anne Campbell last Thursday to discuss the Club's latest position with regard to redevelopment. I understand from Richard Smith, who co-ordinated the meeting, that a positive discussion was hold and it became clear that the headline in the CEN was misleading. Anne Campbell reiterated that she was supportive of the Club's future, whichever option it decided to pursue, including redevelopment on the present site.

The message before our last home game to arrive early was received favourably and I do hope that it helped to alleviate congestion at the turnstiles. It is important to remember, however, that this was not just a one-off request. All games between now and the end of the season are vitally important and with the steady increase in attendances at The Abbey I would like to repeat our request for supporters to continue to arrive in good time. Graham Eales will hopefully be lining up some form of pre-match entertainment or activities to keep you occupied.

With attendances on the increase there is also a need to recruit more match day staff. More turnstile operators, more stewards, more programme and Golden Gamble sellers are required. If you are interested, or you require further details, then please give either myself or Mark Johnson a call on 01223 566500.

Following the cancellation of last Tuesday's game at Rochdale, I am still unable to confirm a new date as they are still involved in the Auto Windscreens Shield. They play on Tuesday in the Area Semi-Final, but should they get knocked out then we will hopefully be able to arrange the fixture for March 16th, failing that it may be delayed until April. As soon as it is confirmed we will contact Clubcall, Andrea's website and all the usual media sources.

Tickets are going well for the three all-ticket games and supporters are reminded that the special offer for purchasing tickets for all three games ends today. The Ticket Office will be open again after the final whistle. Next Tuesday we host Birmingham City Youths in the Southern Junior Floodlit Cup, with a 7.00pm kick-off. Your support of our rising young stars would be greatly appreciated and it also gives you the opportunity to see the calibre of players we have coming through our Youth system.

Finally, I would like to publicise the benefits of signing up for a Cambridge United F.C. MasterCard. So far, 70 cards are in circulation and the total royalties raised for the Club by Card Holders are £1882.36, We will be hopefully featuring the Card in greater detail in the Hull programme, but in the meantime here are some of the benefits for the Club:

£5.00 is paid on activation of the Card.
A further £2.50 is paid if the Card is still in use after 8 months and then 20 months. The Club receives 0.25% of total turnover by our Card base.
Application forms are available from the Club Shop and the Ticket Office and further details are included on these forms.
