Lady Luck certainly wasn't in evidence at Bucks Head last Saturday, despite Trevor Benjamin and Martin Butler ensuring a comfortable 2-0 victory over Telford United in the F.A. Cup. The draw after the game sees us again on our travels to either Macclesfield or Slough in the Second Round, whilst also of concern was the welfare of the elderly lady hit by the ball which was kicked into the crowd by ex-U Micky Norbury. The lady concerned, Mrs Betty Horton, suffered injuries to her head and ribs and Roy and the players have sent their best wishes for her speedy recovery via a "Get Well" card.
This is not the first such incident to receive press attention, with an incident at Huddersfield Town now possibly heading to the courts. These incidents cannot really be avoided, but Torquay United have recently banned shooting in the pre-match warm-up to avoid such an occurrence. This may sound bizarre, but in their defence supporters do not always focus on events taking place before the game as intently as they do when the game is underway. So if you're reading this programme stood behind the goal, either read it later or keep half an eye on the pitch! Seriously though, please take care, especially as young children are often positioned near to the pitch to gain a better vantage point. Going back to the Second Round draw, the replay at Slough is not until Tuesday so therefore no details are yet available, other than that it will be played on Saturday, December 5th, Sky having chosen games involving Manchester City and Leyton Orient for televised coverage. Around this date we are also hoping to meet Leyton Orient when we get together for the 'Billy' Beall tribunal hearing to set the fee for his transfer to Brisbane Road, although the date has not yet been confirmed. One thing that has been confirmed is the kick-off time of the game against Rotherham United on Boxing Day. This will definitely be at 3.00pm. Following the success of the 'Quid-a-Kid' promotion at the Brighton game in October, we will be repeating this offer at the game against Plymouth Argyle on December 12th. Today also sees the launch of prices for Half Season Tickets, an ideal Christmas gift for the avid U's fan. The various Season Ticket prices are detailed on page 37 of today's programme and application forms are available from the Ticket Office. Trevor Benjamin's excellent form this season has not gone unnoticed. As well as regularly being watched by a posse of scouts from higher division clubs, Trevor this week gained further recognition when he was placed on standby to represent the Nationwide Football League in their fixture against their Italian counterparts next Wednesday. Although not actually making the final squad of 16, Trevor may be required should any of the players already named sustain injuries in today's fixtures. He would be in good company if he did get the call-up for the side, which is being managed by Peter Taylor, as Ipswich and England Under-21 regulars Richard Wright and Kieron Dyer are both in the squad. The last person to represent the Club in such a fixture was our physio, Ken Steggles, in the days when Glenn Hoddle took charge of the side. Finally, I would like to clear a few items off my desk which have found their way to me in recent weeks. Firstly I have in my possession a mobile phone which was found by Andy Duncan beneath the Main Stand on the Monday after the Barnet game. If anyone has lost one, and it matches the description to the one I have, it will be returned. Also I have received a £5 note in a brown padded envelope with no explanatory letter. Now I am not one to receive bungs and in order to avoid an F.A. inquiry I have not yet banked it and it is still attached to the envelope on my desk. Anyone giving the necessary details can either have the money back or the goods for which they sent the money in the first place. Andrew Pincher |
