Today's programme is the last one I will compile and edit before handing over the reins to Mark Johnson, who starts work at The Abbey on November 2nd. I remember the time when Mark was handing back over to me as I resumed responsibility after he had taken on the role for a short period in the 1993-94 season. No longer will I have to harass and cajole people into writing their notes and having experienced that side of things I will endeavour to make Mark's life easier by submitting mine on time!
Producing a programme is no simple task and whilst it involves a lot of hard work from a whole host of contributors, you can also gain a lot of satisfaction from seeing the finished product on a Match day. This season's effort is probably the best we have done and we are hoping we will gain the recognition we think it deserves. Last Saturday the draw was made for for Round One of the Auto Windscreens Shield and if you were unaware of the draw, then no doubt you will be delighted to hear that we have received a bye to Round Two. Others in the Southern Section of the draw who have received byes include Luton Town, Northampton Town and Southend United. Peterborough, however, face Leyton Orient at London Road. Whilst on the subject of Cup draws, the draw for the First Round Proper of the F.A. Cup, which is this year sponsored by AXA, will be made live on Sky Sports 1 at approximately 5.15pm on Saturday, 31st October 1998. The First Round ties are scheduled to be played on Saturday, 14th November 1998. Following the success of the promotion of the 'Local Hero' Football League initiative at the Brighton game, voting slips are available at today's game courtesy of Colin King Printers of Over. Please make the effort to participate as we can then reveal who you feel has been the 'King of The Abbey' since we joined the Football League in 1970. Today's game sees appearance landmarks for a couple of players if, as I presume, they are selected today. Ben Chenery records his 50th League appearance this afternoon, whilst Marc Joseph reaches 75 today. Also, on Tuesday night at Halifax, skipper Paul Wanless marked his 100th League appearance for the Club with a cut above the eye following a clash of heads with John Taylor. 'JT' has been the subject of much discussion in recent weeks as to how many goals he is behind Alan Biley in the Club's leading goalscoring charts since we have been in the League. Colin Faiers confirmed the details earlier this week which revealed that although John needs ten League goals to pass Alan's League goalscoring record, he only needs four goals to make him the Club's leading scorer in all competitions. Finally, I would like to welcome Andrew Burman, Chief Executive of Shrewsbury Town, to today's game. Not many people will know that Andrew worked as a scout for us earlier this decade and, providing he is here today, it will be nice to renew acquaintances with him. Andrew Pincher |
