Welcome to the Abbey

This time last Friday evening Steve Greenall and I were still working away in the offices, trying to ensure that we had covered as many areas of his role as we could before his departure to Norwich City. The month of my being able to sit and pick his brains was slightly hindered by the response to our monumental victory at Hillsborough last month!

The overwhelming interest in the return leg put paid to everyone's normal duties as all rallied to cope with the demand for tickets. Had we then been drawn at home in the next round, then I doubt I would have had the chance to sit down with Steve at all. However I know he's only at the end of a phone if I need any help.

The draw itself brought back memories of pre-televised F.A. Cup draws when everyone gathered around the radio on a Monday lunchtime. The scene was recreated in our offices on the Saturday of the Exeter game, with Mark Johnson crouched down by the radio, in front of an anxious gathering of staff, when pen and paper in hand as he recorded the draw. A huge cheer went up when we were paired with Nottingham Forest, although selfishly we were a little disappointed as we were all hoping for Manchester United or Liverpool. It could have been a lot worse, however, and we should be pleased that we have been drawn against Premiership opposition. Can we get another scalp?

The game at the City Ground is not all-ticket and Forest are not sending any tickets to sell in advance. Therefore it is just "pay on the night" at the turnstiles. Adults are £12 and concessions £5. The Club are organising coaches to the game and further details can be obtained by either popping into the Club Shop or telephoning them on (01223) 566503.

Last Thursday saw Wayne Andrews join us on a month's loan from Watford which takes him up to and including the game at Mansfield at the end of this month. Wayne went straight into the side at Hull to make his debut, with first year professional Larry McAvoy also making his debut after Ben Chenery was withdrawn from the squad after sustaining an injury in training the previous day. Fortunately Ben's injury is not as bad as first feared.

This evening we welcome a number of ex-players back to The Abbey as we launch our search for our "Local Hero", which is a Football League initiative organised as part of their Centenary celebrations. Every Club has been invited to participate and we aim for the voting to take place at the Shrewsbury game later this month.

In recognition of the League's Centenary, tonight sees us joining in with the celebrations by offering a 'Quid a Kid' scheme for this evening's fixture. As well as individuals, we have had several group bookings and hopefully this will help to generate a good atmosphere at the game tonight.

Finally thanks to all those who attended Steve Greenall's leaving party in the Harris Suite last Saturday. I know he was delighted with the response and overwhelmed to to receive so many cards from friends and supporters and such nice gifts from members of Moosenet. Steve and his wife Ailsa are pictured above with Chairman Reg Smart. Steve is expected here tonight ... he just can't keep away!
