News that I had resigned my position as Company Secretary and Financial Controller of the Club came too late for inclusion in last week's programme. I have been at the Club for eight years, and as I think Randall Butt has already said, have served it longer than any other Secretary in its League history. Indeed, only the late Frank Pettitt was Secretary for longer - but six of Frank's years encompassed the years of World War 2! I really will miss the involvement with the Club, as I have been very fortunate to have been able to make an impression with many connected with it. In addition to the brilliant staff I have worked with - and they all know who they are - if I didn't know before, I certainly know now how much the fans care about me.
I am very appreciative of the messages, cards and in this electronic age, e-mail, that I have received since a week last Thursday. However, to use yet again a phrase I heard a while ago, but seems appropriate now, "You can take the man from the Club, but you can't take the Club from the man". By that you can take it that I will be back from time to time, only now as a fan. I am delighted that Andy Pincher has agreed to take over as secretary. I have nothing but the greatest admiration for Andy; I know he has the ability to do well. I hope he enjoys the same support that I have. As you can imagine, the next four weeks will be very hectic. When you come to sit down and describe what you do, sometimes, you wonder how it all got done. But my main task before the end of October, is to ensure that Andy gets as much knowledge as he can. What he doesn't pick up, he knows I'm only on the end of a phone. I am looking forward to my new job at Norwich City. It marks a major departure for me because, since I started work back in February 1977, I have always worked with figures. The role of Communications Manager is one which is of great interest, as you will have noted if you read the profile (no, Dave DIDN'T know I could be leaving when he wrote it - it is not an obituary!) that Dave Brown wrote about me a few weeks ago. Whether we like it or not, the media plays a massive role in many sports today, especially football, and with the era of digital upon us, who knows what is around the corner. I see Norwich as a club with the potential and the structure to make it back to the Premier League, and whatever we all do with our lives, if we have any ambition it is to be the best, or compete with them. Before I go, though, there is a lot to be done, not least of which to deal with the biggest two matches the club has been involved in for some years. The away leg of our Worthington Cup-tie is now just a few days away. If you want to avoid the worst of the queues at Hillsborough, I advise you to buy your ticket before you go. They will be on sale today before and after the match, and are priced £14 for adults and £10 for concessions. The return leg here is on 22nd September. We are selling Main Stand tickets in advance of the game, but for the time being, it is "pay on the night" for terrace tickets. If we get a good result on Wednesday, we will sell terrace tickets to those who want to avoid a rush or queue that night. Finally, congratulations to Andy Ingham, who signed a two-year professional contract just days after his 17th birthday. Andy hails from Norwich, and just look what happened to the last centre forward we nicked from under their noses! STEVE GREENALL |
